Program Highlights

NEW Kid Librarian Display 📚

In September, we had our very first awesome kid librarian, Olivia, create a wonderful display of favorite books to recommend to other kids. Thanks, Olivia, for your great recommendations!

NEW Early Learning Center Interactive Apple Orchard

Our Early Learning Center (ELC) has new apple orchard and autumn-themed play stations! 🍂 Stop in to pick apples from trees, sort them by color, visit the apple orchard store, and rake some autumn leaves.

Our ELC fosters early literacy, social skills, and a love of learning. It’s a wonderful place for children to connect with their peers and families in a safe, welcoming environment.

National Friends of Libraries Week: October 20-26, 2024 🎉

In celebration of National Friends of Libraries Week, Mary Armstrong (President of the Friends) shares this message with our community:

Forty-three years ago this month, a committed group of five Shorewood citizens came together with a pledge to support the village library. They held a meeting in one member’s living room. The minutes were handwritten.

The same spirit of community service that guided that very first meeting of the Friends of the Shorewood Public Library guides us still. The Friends, now with over 150 members, continues to provide financial and volunteer support for the library. Friends’ funding helps to expand the library’s collections, including the popular Lucky Day books, and to provide programs like Terrific Tuesdays for kids, author visits, and Shakespeare in Shorewood. Friends volunteers were on hand to help make the library's Summer Celebration a success, and they work to keep book shelves in order.

October 20-26 is National Friends of Libraries week. It’s a perfect time to join the Friends and become part of a time-honored tradition of backing the library. To register, look for a Friends table at the library during the last week of the month, pick up a membership form at the front desk, or join online.

October Staff Picks

This month, we're reading spooky books to get ready for Halloween 👻 Check them out at the library!

Cackle

by Rachel Harrison

"A darkly funny, frightening novel about a young woman learning how to take what she wants, from a witch who might be too good to be true." (Provided by publisher)

--- Recommended by JOAN

Into The Drowning Deep

by Mira Grant

Recommended by KATE, who notes this book is "a haunting, cinematic novel about what may lurk in the darkest part of the ocean. There are monsters, perhaps, but also chilling isolation and strange beauty. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to curl up and shiver on an October afternoon."

Doctor Sleep

by Stephen King

An epic sequel to The Shining, this book is "...a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted readers of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon." (From the publisher)

--- Recommended by CAROLYN

A Guest in the House

by Emily Carroll

"After many lonely years, Abby's just gotten married. She met her new husband--a recently widowed dentist--when he arrived in town with his young daughter, seeking a new start. Although it's strange living in the shadow of her predecessor, Abby does her best to be a good wife and mother. But the more she learns about her new husband's first wife, the more things don't add up. And Abby starts to wonder ... was Sheila's death really by natural causes? As Abby sinks deeper into confusion, Sheila's memory seems to become a force all its own, ensnaring Abby in a mystery that leaves her obsessed, fascinated, and desperately in love for the first time in her life." (Provided by publisher)

Mooncakes

by Susan Walker and Wendy Xu

Recommended by QUINN, who describes this book as "a cute, cozy graphic novel about a werewolf and a witch. The witch, Nova, lives and works in a magical bookstore and coffee shop with her grandmothers. She discovers that her childhood crush, Tam, is back in town—and has turned into a werewolf—when she finds Tam battling a horse demon in the middle of the woods. Together, the two need to hunt down this mysterious, dark force. The art is beautiful, and the world-building is whimsical and fun. Though brief, the story is deeply heartfelt, and it's definitely one of my favorite spooky reads."

We Need to Do Something

by Max Booth III

Recommended by KAYLA, who says this story "sees a dysfunctional family taking shelter in their bathroom during a storm, and becoming trapped inside when a giant tree collapses onto their house. Beyond the immediate descent of the family's already strained mindsets, secrets are revealed that shed a horrible light on what this storm really might be. Despite the entire story taking place within a bathroom, it oozes atmosphere and tension from the first page to the last. I know that, for me, when spooky season comes around, it's all about atmosphere, and this book certainly pulls no punches!"

Hurricane Season

by Fernanda Melchor

Recommended by BEN, who gives a word of caution that this book "is not a good choice for anybody with a weak constitution or tolerance for depravity" and provides this spooky review:

"The witch turns up dead, her body pale and leeched, floating down the river discovered by children at play. This sick revelation ignites the village to erupt in rumor and intrigue about how and why her murder had occurred.

Melchor weaves together several narratives from the locals in blunt, aggressive, breath-stealing prose. Chapters in Hurricane Season do not break into paragraphs or sections. They are long to a degree of unrelenting exhaustion in every point of its peculiar style of writing. Melchor is conservative with punctuation and her sentences can last whole pages. Mix her style of telling with the intensely disturbing actions and behaviors of her main cast and the result is a book that stands alone in its pit of horror and sorrow."
