October 2020
YW Calgary is committed to supporting the safety
and well-being of community members.
October at your YW
For many, fall really is the start of the year. This time is characterized by new school routines, the leaves changing colour and learning how to make the best of life while navigating COVID-19. For YW, what remains consistent are the programs and services we continue to offer virtually and in-person to support women and families in our community.

If the return of cold weather has you looking to move your workout indoors, YW Fitness continues to provide a safe and healthy workout space with bookable workout times to accommodate physical distancing and help you get back into your routine. As well, the YW Childcare Centre has part-time, drop in and fulltime spaces available if you are easing back into working from the office or juggling school and childcare.

While nature and the changing seasons remind us of what is constant in life, the uncertainty of the months to come adds layers of stress for many. If you're nervous about a potential second wave of COVID-19 and the stress associated with it, YW has supports available to help you and your family navigate this challenging time. Take advantage of our new web-based skill-building tool, Mindfulicity to enhance your capacity to manage your mental wellness. We welcome our community members to try Coping with Uncertainty, the first offering of this new initiative, available now, FREE until Thanksgiving. To learn more about Mindfulicity and its potential benefits for you, keep reading!

Building resilience will help each of us navigate this challenging time. In this month’s newsletter, we are excited to tell you about some of the free resources we offer at YW Calgary that may be of value to you and your family.
Manage stress and cope with uncertainty
New at YW: Mindfulicity
What is Mindfulicity? How can it help me?
Mindfulicity is a program YW Calgary developed from our “secret sauce” – our depth of experience and proven outcomes from working in mental health and high conflict situations. We’ve taken our counselling expertise and applied it to the workplace to help build individual and organizational capacity for psychological safety. Through a series of 10 quick, online skill-building modules, Mindfulicity helps employees gain critical skills to regulate their emotions and manage ongoing micro-aggressions. We truly believe that when employers and individuals invest in this skill-building training, they lay the groundwork for safe and secure spaces at work and at home.

What have people been saying about Mindfulicity?
Those who have taken Mindfulicity courses say it helps! Of the nearly 500 people who have signed up to date, 84% report that the free Coping with Uncertainty course prepared them to better manage stress and uncertainty. Many of our community members who have tried Mindfulicity say that they know people who could benefit from this training, whether it be their colleague, boss, partner, or teenage children. It really applies to everyone as Mindfulicity tackles the basic foundational skills that many programs skip over – it focuses on promoting personal accountability and how each of us has the opportunity to influence the outcome of a stressful situation.

How can I access the benefits of Mindfulicity today?
We highly encourage everyone to check out our Coping with Uncertainty course that we’re offering for free for a limited time at Mindfulicity.ca. If you know of employers who would be interested in the Mindfulicity program for their employees, please let them know about your experience with the course and share the link to Mindfulicity with them!
A mobile dental clinic is coming to the YW Hub facility
The Alex Dental Health Bus Program
We recognize that many of the families we support through our programs and in our community may face barriers when trying to access dental health care.

YW Calgary is excited to have partnered with The Alex to offer a new service at the YW Hub facility, located in Inglewood at 1715 17 Ave. S.E. The Alex Dental Health Bus is a fully functional mobile dental health clinic that provides free dental care to low-income children and youth ages 6 to 24, with the flexibility to go younger if need be. Available every first and third Thursday of the month, the Alex Dental Health Bus offers:

  • oral health screenings
  • fluoride treatments
  • oral hygiene education
  • distribution of oral hygiene supplies such as toothbrushes, floss, etc.
  • referrals

Thirty minute appointments are offered between 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and can be booked by calling or texting YW Calgary at 403.262.0497.
YW virtual event on Thursday, October 8
International Day of the Girl
Young women are at greater risk for mental health challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. If left unaddressed, these challenges can impair their long term physical and mental wellbeing and limit their opportunities to lead a fulfilling life. We don’t yet know what impact this could have on their future success.

Join YW Calgary on the evening of October 8th as we host our inaugural virtual event in celebration of International Day of the Girl. Geared to an inter-generational audience, this event aims to inspire and uplift, while examining the present-day issues facing girls and women in their lives.

Renowned chef (and local hero) Julie Van Rosendaal will host a live dessert cooking demonstration from the Community Kitchen at YW Calgary. Attendees will also hear from our youth speakers about lessons they’ve learned, bringing girls’ perspectives to the event. This will be followed by an interactive conversation with resiliency expert and Psychologist Dr. Raechelle Paperny and Lana Bentley, YW Calgary’s Director of Program Strategy.
Punch passes and personal training
YW Fitness has options for your workout
Did you know that YW Calgary has a brand new, state-of-the-art co-ed fitness centre in Inglewood?

YW Fitness wants to ensure that you have a customized workout experience with us. That's why we've introduced some exciting new options for you to maximize your time and effort spent at the gym.

YW Fitness recently added personal training to our offerings through a partnership with Every Body STRONGER. A customized program designed for you will be created during your two-hour consultation and assessment where you will uncover and correct movement patterns you didn't even know were holding you back. Every Body STRONGER and YW Fitness are here to help you transition back into a fitness routine that is built to fulfill your true potential. Learn more about personal training at YW Calgary.
Not sure about making a commitment to come to the gym on a regular basis? We've introduced YW Fitness Punch Passes, a flexible way to access YW Fitness Centre. For a limited time only, we’re making your first visit free – that’s 11 visits for the price of 10. Here’s how it works:

  1. Punch Passes can be purchased by visiting our online store and do not expire. Full payment for all visits will be made at the time of purchase.
  2. A YW Fitness Centre access card will be made for every purchase. Access cards will expire after your final visit.
  3. Workouts must be booked online and visits will automatically be deducted from your card at the time of booking. Cancellation of a workout must be done online at least one hour before your scheduled workout time to avoid usage of that visit.
Build stronger family relationships
Sign up for Family Resource Network this fall
School is back in session for many children and teenagers across Calgary, but this fall is unlike any before. Navigating a new grade can be difficult, now add in physical distancing, mask wearing and a potential second wave of COVID-19 and your child may be feeling more anxiety and stress in the classroom and at home than anticipated. If you're wondering how to better manage and respond to your child's strong emotions and behaviours in an effective way, register for the Family Resource Network at YW Calgary.

In collaboration with our partners across the city, we offer free virtual and in-person programming to help strengthen family relationships and build effective communication between parents and children. Take advantage of virtual sessions on topics such as resilience in children, healthy coping strategies for children and parents, anxiety in children and parents and much more.

Family Resource Network is part of a larger group of supports offered at YW that help with building stronger family relationships. If this is of interest to you, your family may also benefit from YW Calgary's Mindful Moments and Counselling programs.

If you want to gain the skills and knowledge to strengthen the family relationship, teach children and teens to cope with trauma, build resiliency and foster well-being, register for Family Resource Network today. Call 403.262.0497 or email us with your questions.
