October 2026

College Application Tips!

October is the time to start focusing on your college apps more seriously, so you aren’t overwhelmed as the deadline steadily approaches.

  • Finalize your college list so you don’t have last-minute doubts.
  • Take a look at the Common App and UC App platforms so you can start collecting all the required information.
  • Look into common essay questions and personal insight questions and start writing drafts.
  • Start collecting Letters of Recommendation from teachers and counselors.
  • Take breaks and ask for help when you need it!

Remember, you don't have to complete your application and write essays alone. At allcove, we're here to support your mental health, physical health and education. Reach out if you are ever confused or attend one of the college prep workshops in October and November. There are also options to have one-on-one assistance with your applications with our Education and Employment Specialist!

Red Ribbon Week

The red ribbon represents a commitment to living drug-free and serves as a reminder to make informed, healthy choices. Join us October 23–31 for Red Ribbon Week as we recognize that the risks surrounding substance use and overdose continue to change.

This week, watch our naloxone training video to learn about current risks, how to recognize the signs of an overdose and how to administer naloxone (Narcan) to potentially save a life.

Not sure where to start? allcove is here for you with resources, support, services and free naloxone. No judgment, just a safe place to ask questions and get informed.

Join us on October 21 for “real talk: stress, substances & coping” at allcove Beach Cities on Wednesday, October 21 from 5 – 6 pm.

Let’s have a real conversation about substance use, prevention and the pressures young people face today. We’ll talk about stress, mental health, peer pressure, healthy coping and making informed choices. Bring your questions and an open mind. No judgment, just real talk.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is recognized as Domestic Abuse Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of safe, respectful and healthy relationships. Abuse can take many forms including emotional, physical, verbal or digital. It often begins with unhealthy patterns that may go unnoticed. By learning to recognize these signs early and practicing positive communication, young people can feel more confident in building relationships rooted in trust and respect.

Join us on October 13 for “real talk: healthy relationships” at 5:00 pm to have meaningful conversations about respect, communication, boundaries, trust and much more. This workshop hopes to shine light to more real-life scenarios and support each other in cases that don’t feel right.

Youth Voice Corner

We're excited to kick off our very first Youth Voice Corner feature! This month, we're spotlighting Alina R., who is sharing her voice and perspective with our community.

At allcove Beach Cities, we believe young people have valuable stories, experiences and ideas worth sharing. We're excited to give Alina the spotlight as we launch this new series!

Keep reading to hear what Alina has to share!

Hi there! My name is Alina, I'm 17 years old and just graduated from Redondo Union High School. Going into high school I was anxious, stressed, excited, optimistic and generally unsure of what was to come but now that I'm on the other side of it, there are a few pieces of advice I'd give someone else who is starting high school and may be feeling similarly. I think it’s important to know that these four years may be a rollercoaster with some joyous moments intertwined with possibly some of your biggest challenges yet and a lot in between. However, things have a way of working out in the end and these years will bring so much growth, so embrace the high and lows but know that you don’t have to go through them alone. There are so many people around you that care about you so lean on them for guidance, support or to pick you up when you need it (friends, teachers, resources like allcove can all be great). Everyone is going through their own rollercoaster/journey so try not to compare yourself to others because you’re doing your best and just be kind to everyone because you never know what someone could be going through. Lastly, take any opportunity even if that means doing something new or scary because this is the best time to explore and learn about yourself and you never know what could come of something (some of the best experiences I’ve had came when I least expected them). You aren’t alone in this journey and you got this!

Another Step Toward Our New Home

Our future home is starting to take shape! This month, construction crews are pouring the concrete footings for the new allcove Beach Cities building at 1272 Beryl Street on the BCHD campus. It’s an exciting milestone that brings us one step closer to completing the building in spring 2027.

When complete, the new two-story, 9,400-square-foot wellness center will give young people ages 12–25 a dedicated space to access free mental health services, connect with peers, explore education and career opportunities, and find a place where they belong.

We’re grateful to everyone who has helped get us to this point. State and federal funding helped lay the foundation, and community donors are helping bring this vision to life.

Want to help build what comes next? Every gift helps create a welcoming, youth-centered space that will serve our community for years to come. And gifts of $25 or more are eligible for an allcove thank-you gift as a small token of our appreciation.

And to everyone who has already donated: thank you! Your support is helping make the future home of allcove Beach Cities possible. We couldn’t do this without you.
