Fire Prevention Week

The week of October 9th

2022 Campaign

Join NFPA® in celebrating the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW). This year’s FPW campaign, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape™”, works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires.

Today’s homes burn faster than ever. You may have as little as two minutes (or even less time) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning.

Here’s more fire safety information you can use:

California gas refund payments are arriving soon. See if you're eligible

Californians who qualify for the state's gas price relief program should start to see their payments in the next few weeks.

The $9.5 billion tax refund will provide one-time payments of up to $1,050. Gov. Gavin Newsom and state lawmakers reached a deal for the refunds back in June, when gas prices were shattering records at or above $7 a gallon.

To be eligible, you must have filed your 2020 tax return by last October and make less than $150,000 per year. To calculate your payment, go to the state's website and click on "Middle Class Tax Refund."

Those eligible should receive their payment some time between October and January, either by direct deposit or debit card.

The Federal Government’s recently announced student loan debt relief plan promises good news, notably a one-time cancellation of up to $20,000 for eligible borrowers. However, as with any public program involving money, scammers are already trying to take advantage of consumers.

Details about the plan are expected to arrive as soon as October, but for now, there is no application form. There is no waitlist. There is no money available today. If you get a phone call or a text message or an email message that suggests anything else, it’s a scam. Learn more about what you can do today.

Public safety concerns are driving local elections, major legislative action, and decisions by some employers to relocate. We cannot overstate the link between public safety and economic security – or the link between law enforcement efforts and smart business practices. LAPD Chief Michel Moore doubled down on the power of partnership between police and private sector leaders during a Leadership Roundtable last week, urging BizFed members to invest in security cameras that can aid in police investigations, prevent crime by reminding patrons to protect their property, and advance incentive programs that make it easier for LAPD to hire more officers.

“Please keep the faith. We know a successful city is one with strong business that’s worth investing in," the 40-year LAPD veteran said.

LA council committee recommends end date for city's COVID eviction moratorium

City News Service

Thursday, September 29, 2022 12:14PM

LOS ANGELES (CNS) -- A council committee recommended Wednesday that Los Angeles' eviction protections due to COVID-19 hardship end on Jan. 31, setting a potential end date for the moratorium established at the beginning of the pandemic to come before the full council.

The council's Ad Hoc Committee on COVID-19 Recovery and Neighborhood Investment voted 4-0 to sunset protections for tenants unable to pay rent due to COVID-19 financial impact. The committee's recommendation follows the council's Housing Committee discussion earlier this month, in which it approved an amendment to the Los Angeles Housing Department's report that would extend eviction protections beyond LAHD's Dec. 31 recommendation.

The Blood Drive on September 20th was a huge success!

Thank you for helping all the patients at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles

.

Each blood donation truly is a “gift of life” that a healthy individual can give to others in their

community who are sick or injured. In about one hour, a person can donate one unit of blood that

could help save multiple lives. That blood can only come from a volunteer donor, a person like you.

There is no substitute for your time and your blood.

This collaboration provided our children with another chance at life. We saw 32 donors and we

were able to collect 25 precious units of blood, which can be potentially processed into 50 blood

and blood components that can save just as many lives.

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles treats over 350,000 children every year. These children require

over 2,000 units of blood each month to successfully complete their treatments. Maintaining a safe

and adequate blood supply for our patients is a demanding undertaking. Fortunately, thanks to UEI School, Encino Chamber of Commerce and West Valley Medical Center, we can fulfill our promise to treat the sickest and most injured children in our community.

Faisal Mahmood Gill was our guest speaker at our luncheon and is currently running for LA City Attorney. He is a Pakistani-born American lawyer, administrator, and government advisor, who served as the interim chairman of the Vermont Democratic Party for several months in 2017.

Should you get one of the new COVID-19 boosters?

Here’s what you need to know

By Sandy Cohen • September 19, 2022

‘It still remains extremely important to get vaccinated,’ says UCLA Health immunology and infectious diseases expert Dr. Otto Yang.

The bivalent booster delivers proteins from the original strain of COVID-19, as well as from sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5.

New omicron-specific COVID-19 booster shots are rolling out across the country, including at UCLA Health. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone age 12 and older who has been fully vaccinated receive the new booster dose.

“If you are eligible, there is no bad time to get your COVID-19 booster,” says CDC director Rochelle Walensky, MD, MPH, “and I strongly encourage you to receive it.”

This new “bivalent” booster delivers the spike proteins from the original strain of COVID-19 as well as the now-dominant omicron sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5.
