Fight Hunger YOUR Way Recap
|
|
Thank you to everyone - near and far - who participated in our virtual event!
We blew past our first goal of $11,000 and were able to raise nearly $13,000 to support our programs that promote a local food system that ensures food security for all St. Lawrence County residents.
It's times like these we're happy to have such a rock star planning committee! Thank you to Chair Angela Villeneuve-Bronson, Katie Dolan, Annie Drake, Victoria Lederer, Maggie Maguire, and Carol Pynchon for your creativity and quick thinking as we leapt into the wacky world of virtual races and events.
We also wanted to give a special shout out to Beth Slater, our top fundraiser, who raised $1,501!
We also want to give a shout out to our friends in Hammond who went above and beyond and set up their own 5K course for the event.
Check out photos of the other fun and creative ways our supporters fought hunger here.

Last Month of Farmers Markets
|
Speaking of local food: the Canton, Gouverneur, and Potsdam farmers markets are still open until the last week of October!
Now's the time to stock up on all your fall favorites, or get some decorative pumpkins for carving. You might even get lucky and find some of tomatoes that survived the frost.
The Double Up Food Bucks program is still happening! If you have taken advantage of the program, please stop by the Market Manager's table to fill out a survey about your experience. Positive feedback helps keep the program operating in our area.
If you still have Bonus Bucks cards left for this season, make sure to redeem them all before the last market day.

What has changed the most in your time in the North Country? While living in the North Country on SLU’s campus over the past 2.5 years, I feel that what has changed the most for me is my connection to the community and the surrounding environment. I think when I first arrived on campus as a freshman I was reluctant to participate in different clubs and programs that help engage students with the community, but now that I have spent a few years in the area I have been able to see the importance of students giving back and actively engaging and getting to know the area outside of St. Lawrence University.
Favorite song, book, or movie? Currently my favorite song is “Be Like That” by Kane Brown Ft. Swae Lee & Khalid
What one word would you use to describe yourself? Compassionate
Anne Frank once said that in spite of everything, she believed people were basically good. Do you agree or disagree? Why? I agree with Anne Frank when she said she believed people were basically good. I think a lot of the time we lack an understanding of one another. In other words, I don’t think there are bad people in our world, I think there are people who are misunderstood or have gotten lost along the way. These people that are often viewed as bad may just need help and don’t know how to ask for it or do not have the resources to receive it.
What would I find in your refrigerator right now?
Right now, my refrigerator contains a pitcher of green tea, peach juice, and lots of fruits and veggies!

Hometown and Current town of residence: My hometown is Georgia, Vermont. I currently live here in Canton.
Role at GardenShare: I am working on designing logos, stickers, posters, flyers and Instagram stories for GardenShare.
How long? I began working with GardenShare in early September and will continue to work with them until mid-late November.
Why I do what I do (at GardenShare): I am passionate about environmental justice and advocating for access to healthy foods.Working with GardenShare has/will teach me more about these issues impact residents of the North Country and how I can help!

Hobbies: I like to cook, bake, and decorate cakes, watch TedTalks and Netflix, do any kind of arts and crafts, garden, read, spend time with my two Great Danes (Lucas and Annie), and go on walks.
If you could do or be anything else, what would it be? Why? If I wasn’t a student, I would own/run a small farming operation/CSA. For the last two summers I’ve planted a garden for myself and my family, and it has brought me a lot of joy. It also allows me to contribute less plastic waste since many of the items which I grew would be sold in bags at the store. And if I couldn’t farm, I would build a tiny house and travel around the United States and Canada.
Favorite song, book, or movie? The Best of Me or The Notebook (the book and movie versions are both great).
Last read? Silenced Girls by Roger Stelljes
What one word would you use to describe yourself? Determined
What would I find in your refrigerator right now? Cheddar cheese, apple cider, a compost jar, eggs, grapes, maple syrup, milk, shake parmesan cheese, yogurt, and rice with beans.
