From the Director
Dear CHESS Community,

The leaves are changing with the cooler weather in Ithaca, and Cornell students are returning from their fall break. Here at the lab, CHESS is preparing for the upcoming user run, and we are excited to welcome users back after a long summer shutdown.

A few changes have taken place since we commenced construction on the New Experimental Hall, and we will be providing updates on the status of the project as well as the upcoming run at a User’s Town Hall on October 19th. Please join us.

This newsletter features a highlight from Sector 7 of CHESS, where researchers used small-angle X-ray scattering at CHESS to analyze ribonucleotide reductases (RNRs), a family of proteins used by all free-living organisms and many viruses to repair and replicate DNA. From this research, Cornell scientists have created an evolutionary model that connects organisms living in today’s oxygen-rich atmosphere to a time, billions of years ago, when Earth’s atmosphere had little oxygen.

We also highlight the search for the Director of the Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based Sciences and Education (CLASSE). While CHESS is the largest of the research projects within CLASSE, the center facilitates an array of research projects in accelerator physics, theoretical and experimental particle physics, cosmology, photon science, biology, biomedicine, chemistry, and materials engineering. Learn more.

CHESS is honored to be hosting the next Pan-American Light Sources for Agriculture (PALSA) conference next year. PALSA is an international conference in partnership with CHESS, the Canadian Light Source (CLS), and the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS). You can help shape the conference by taking a quick survey available on the PALSA website.

I look forward to welcoming our CHESS users back into the lab and hope to see you at the Town Hall on October 19th.

User Town Hall October 19th

Join us for our next Users Town Hall on October 19th at 11am EDT.
Topics will include an update from the director, an NEH Update, logistical updates, and a Q& A.
Protein family shows how life adapted to oxygen

Crystal structure of a type III Rubisco in complex with its product 3-phosphoglycerate

Recent research performed at CHESS gives insight into intermediate stages of Rubisco’s catalysis mechanism.
2023 PALSA at CHESS

The 3rd International Pan American Light Sources for Agriculture (PALSA 2023) will be held on July 12-14, 2023. CHESS will host this in-person conference in partnership with the Canadian Light Source (CLS) and the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS).

Please take the pre-conference survey here.
CLASSE Seeks New Director

The Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based Sciences and Education (CLASSE) is a major interdisciplinary research center whose mission includes the study of accelerator physics, photon science – including advanced x-ray-based characterization methods (CHESS) - cosmology, and particle physics.
