Dear CHESS community,
As CHESS researchers return this month, I am excited to share some significant developments at CHESS that are shaping the future of our facility and reinforcing our commitment to sustainability and user support.
While the New Experimental Hall is being constructed in plain view, behind the scenes, we have successfully connected Wilson Lab to lake source cooling. This transformation, while transparent to your research activities, signifies a significant milestone in our sustainability efforts. By connecting to the cool waters of Cayuga Lake and thus eliminating the need for cooling towers to regulate accelerator components, we are now conserving a remarkable 10,000 gallons of water daily. This positive change reflects our dedication to environmental responsibility without impeding your invaluable work.
I am also pleased to introduce BeamPASS, our new proposal platform mentioned in our latest Town Hall. This platform was crafted with CHESS users and their data needs in mind. We are excited to work with you and help you unlock the full potential of your data with BeamPASS. Please remember, having a CLASSE ID is the gateway to our platform. If you encounter any issues with your CLASSE ID, login process, or any other aspect of BeamPASS, please feel free to contact our IT support team at service-classe@cornell.edu.
Additionally, I would like to inform you about a new opportunity at CHESS—the X-CITE project. This initiative is set to create a comprehensive training program tailored to scientists utilizing our synchrotron. Scientists from diverse fields and backgrounds will greatly benefit from this endeavor. The program encompasses training materials and activities that will improve accessibility to CHESS instruments, data, and tools. It will also facilitate access to national computing resources and services provided by the NSF. Stay tuned for more details on this exciting grant.
CHESS is committed to continuously enhancing your research experience and promoting sustainable practices. We are excited to embark on this journey with you as we explore new opportunities, streamline processes, and make a positive impact on the world of scientific research.
Thank you for being a part of our research community, and we look forward to all the discoveries that lie ahead.
Sincerely,
Joel Brock, Director, CHESS (email Joel)
