LPC Updates

The Behavioral Health Executive Council (BHEC) Inaugural Meeting The Behavioral Health Executive Council will hold its inaugural meeting on Tuesday, 10/15/19 in Austin. HB 1501 (86R) reauthorized all the behavioral health licensing boards and created BHEC to administratively house them in one agency. Remember, BHEC will not replace any of the licensing boards. They will continue to meet independently and retain their regulatory authority over their respective professionals. Check out the BHEC Agenda or log in to watch the BHEC meeting starting at 11 a.m. TCA will be there!

TSBEPC Meeting The Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors, along with their Application & Supervision and Complaints Committees met in Austin in late September. Significant discussion on petitions for rule changes including changing LPC-Intern to LPC-Association which the Board indicated is still under consideration. A petition to allow LPC-Interns to operate a private practice and bill independently was denied. It was recommended that a pending request to expand anti-discrimination language is the rules be resubmitted. The Supervision & Applications Committee is expected to research the rationale behind the requirement to have 5 years’ experience as an LPC in Texas to earn the LPC-S.  Read the full report here.

Both the TSBEPC and the TSBEMFT have issued advisories to its licensees reminding them that behavioral health care providers are authorized under the Texas Health and Safety Code to report confidential information to law enforcement if providers determine their client poses an imminent risk of physical harm to themselves or others.

Parent and Family Engagement (PFE) Training Opportunities Parent and Family Engagement (PFE) Training will be offered at several ESCs during the 2019-2020 school year. Workshops will be open to all LEAs and ESCs to provide attendees with an in-depth review of ESSA Section 1116, Parent and Family Engagement as well as strategies to strengthen parent and family engagement at their schools.  More information.
