– October 9, 2018 -- is the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 6 midterm elections.

- Confirm whether you’re registered to vote. Check your registration status on the Texas secretary of state’s website.
- If you’re not registered, fill out an application. You can do so in person at your county voter registrar’s office. You can also print out an application online and mail it in. After a snafu over the weekend, access to the digital form should be working again.
Pencil in a few more deadlines … Early voting starts Oct. 22 and runs through Nov. 2. And, if you’re eligible, you can apply for ballot by mail until Oct. 26.

Take Action: Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Act
|
|
Congress is considering new legislation that would provide funding for school counselors. On Sept. 12, Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR.) and Representative Katherine Clark (D-MA) introduced the Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Act to provide funding to states to improve the staffing ratios for school counselors, psychologists and school social workers.
The American Counseling Association (ACA) supports this legislation and encourages you to let your representatives in Washington know how important it is.
The Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Act would establish two five-year renewable grant programs to staff elementary and secondary schools with school counselors, psychologists and social workers, effectively by providing federal grants to states to disburse to school districts. The new formula would provide funding for all 50 states, and because matching funds are required, states receiving the grants would show a commitment to improving student mental health and wellness.

make a positive impact on their communities through their efforts to advance college and career readiness, including:
- High school seniors
- K-12 professionals
- Postsecondary professionals
- Workforce professionals
Who are making a positive impact on their communities through their efforts to advance college and career readiness.
The ACT College and Career Readiness Champions are individuals across the country who support ACT’s mission of education and workplace success. ACT State Councils serve as the selection committee and select one Champion per category for each participating state. ACT Champions receive individual certificates. In addition, Student Champions receive a $500 non-renewable scholarship.

Wellness Update:
Improve Your Sleep with Some Simple Tweaks
|

With daylight savings time just a few weeks away, now is a good time to get smart about your sleep habits and prepare for the inevitable stress that comes with adjusting your body's clock. The recommended amount of sleep for adults is 7 - 9 hours. How close are you to reaching this range? And what’s the quality of your sleep like?
If your sleep routine has some room for improvement, here are a few strategies to try:
- Keep the same bedtime and wake up time on weekdays and weekends to help keep your body’s clock on a routine.
- Exercise daily - getting some sort of movement each day can help improve the quality of your sleep.
- Evaluate your sleep environment - the ideal sleeping temperature is between 60 and 67 degrees. Take a look at light and sound - the smallest amount of either can disrupt your sleep.
- Create a relaxing bedtime ritual - find something that calms you, such as taking a bath, reading, or meditating.
