St. Emily and St. Thomas Becket Parishes
October 9, 2018
Dear Families,

Liz Mika receiving her award from Bishop Ron Hicks.

Liz with Bishop Casey and Fr. Chris Kulig.

Congratulations to Liz Mika, our second grade catechist, who received the Christifideles Laici Award this last Sunday.  This annual award recognizes lay people who make a significant contribution in the parish. A member of St. Emily, Liz is on the staff at St. Thomas Becket, and she was nominated for the award by Fr. Chris Kulig, the pastor.

This is the "Month of the Rosary", as the feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary is celebrated on October 7. Many of the classes will be saying a decade in class together.

I would encourage you to pray a decade with your child each day. You can find the 'directions' as well as the mysteries in this resource.  If your children are young, this is an excellent way to learn the basic Bible stories in each of the mysteries, as well as the prayers they should all know.

As many of you know, Alyssa Lendino was killed in a car accident this summer.  Her track teammates at Hersey are organizing a collection of sneakers / running shoes.  Sneakers4Funds is a group that pays for used shoes. Those shoes are then cleaned and sent to people in the developing world. Money from the fundraiser will go to the Lendino family to help cover the expenses they have in the wake of the accident.

Kristine Tagbo, a teacher at St. Emily School, is collecting for this project.  Please try to drop off your used shoes by October 12, and she will get them to Hersey.  (Bring them to us in the RE office on Wednesday, if you would like.)

Mark your calendar for the St. Emily Trunk or Treat in our north parking lot.  It will be on October 28 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM.

The Girl Scouts at St. Emily invite your girls to join their troops.  They are also looking for leaders.  If you and your daughter are interested, the info is here.

We would like to invite you to a Back-to-School night in Religious Ed on November 14.  We will have 20 minute periods for you to observe what happens in your child's classroom (and enough time to circulate if you have more than one child.)  We hope that you can join us and discover a bit more about what the kids are learning. Save the date!

Respect Life Month

In October, we will participate in the annual Baby Bottle drive for Heather's House.  Heather's House is about a mile to our east, on the Maryville campus.  They provide support and short term housing for women in crisis pregnancies and after their child is born.

At the end of the month, we'll also collect 'baby shower' items  for Heather's House:  diapers (especially sizes 1,2,and 3), wipes (they are greatly in need of wipes in particular), baby clothing (especially 0-3 month clothing), pacifiers, teething rings, baby shampoo, diaper cream, onesies, and personal items for the mothers such as shampoo, conditioner, lotion, shower gel, etc.

You could also contribute a Wal Mart gift card.

I find that kids are enthusiastic about this project, as they like to help other kids.

You can join in this week

Your children are invited to join the St. Emily Children's Choir.

The choir will rehearse on Wednesdays at 5:15 PM in the school. This is a convenient time, right before our RE classes begin.

The sign up form and schedule for the year are here.

They sing at Sunday masses periodically through the year and also at Christmas.  It is a wonderful opportunity for your child to learn music, be part of the parish music ministry and have fun, too!

Living the Beatitudes
Small Steps Toward Holiness

More in our exploration of Pope Francis' Apostolic Exhortation, Gaudete et Exsultate .

How do we live the mission of Christ?

A Christian cannot think of his or her mission on earth without seeing it as a path of holiness, for "this is the will of God, your sanctification" (1 Thess 4:3). Each saint is a mission, planned by the Father to reflect and embody, at a specific moment in history, a certain aspect of the Gospel.

That mission has its fullest meaning in Christ, and can only be understood through him. At its core, holiness is experiencing, in union with Christ, the mysteries of his life. It consists in uniting ourselves to the Lord's death and resurrection in a unique and personal way, constantly dying and rising anew with him. But it can also entail reproducing in our own lives various aspects of Jesus' earthly life: his hidden life, his life in community, his closeness to the outcast, his poverty and other ways in which he showed his self-sacrificing love....

To recognize the word that the Lord wishes to speak to us through one of his saints, we do not need to get caught up in details, for there we might also encounter mistakes and failures. Not everything a saint says is completely faithful to the Gospel; not everything he or she does is authentic or perfect. What we need to contemplate is the totality of their life, their entire journey of growth in holiness, the reflection of Jesus Christ that emerges when we grasp their overall meaning as a person.
