Montreat Conference Center
News Corner

Thank you to everyone who interacted with us on social media during Youth & Young Adult Rollout Week! We loved being able to share information on some of our favorite conferences and programs, as well as being able to hear directly from you just what makes them so impactful. If you would like to read a brief recap of the announcements made last week, check out this link.

We do want to highlight one particular announcement from Rollout Week: Registration is now open for Montreat Youth Conference and Middle School Conference! Sign up your group today by visiting our website.

Last month we welcomed nearly 100 art lovers to Montreat during Fall Craft Week. Attendees spent the week quilting, carving, drawing, and writing, along with many other forms of craft. If you are interested in attending in 2024, registration will open on November 17! More information coming soon.

During the month of October, we are excited to host Holy Shift, a conference tackling seismic changes in the church we know. Participants will hear from speakers like Diana Butler Bass, Kenda Creasy Dean, and Amos Disasa on the ways they can begin to make a shift in their own congregations. Visit our website to learn more.

Acclaimed author John Philip Newell will return to Montreat this month for not one, but two conference opportunities! Celtic Wisdom 2: Sacred Earth (Oct. 18-20) focuses on the teachings of Eriugena, the Carmina Gadelica, and John Muir. Meanwhile, Thresholds of Hope (Oct. 20-22) provides a more intimate space for participants to learn from John Philip while participating in his House Gatherings model. You can find out more or sign up for these conferences by visiting our website here.

Time to lace up your dancing shoes! In addition to the two events mentioned above, we have added one more event hosted in partnership with The School of Earth & Soul for the general public - a Ceilidh dance on October 19. This event will be a Celtic celebration, complete with music, dancing, and storytelling, in the Montreat Barn. Tickets can be purchased for $15 per person here. Note: if you have already registered for The School of Earth & Soul, this event is included in your registration fee.

Information regarding most of our conference offerings for 2024 is now available on our website. Be sure to check out the list below or visit montreat.org/events to see how you can get involved in the coming year!

The leaves in the valley are just starting to show their fall color! As they continue to turn, we are making plans to once again share pictures and videos for a "virtual tour of leaves" on our social media. Keep an eye out for more information later in the month.

Are you 72 or older? Make a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your Required Minimum Distribution!

A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) allows individuals who are 70½ or older to donate up to $100,000 to one or more charities directly from a taxable IRA. Beginning in the year you turn 72, you can use a QCD to satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution (RMD). You will pay no income tax on gifts made from your IRA. If you have retirement assets in a 401(k), 403(b), etc. you must first roll those funds into an IRA, and then direct the IRA provider to transfer the funds from the IRA directly to your charity of choice. For more details or to see if this is right for you, please consult a qualified tax advisor.

Do you want to make a QCD to Montreat to satisfy part or all of your RMD? Montreat is a qualifying non-profit organization for your gifts under tax ID 56-0532142. If you have more questions, don't hesitate to reach out to our Development Office at development@montreat.org or 828.419.9806.

Keep up with Montreat!
