Bulldog Spotlight:
Sylvia

Yep, I left the past behind and I am now looking forward to a fabulous future with no more babies and a lot of couch time! I never had a name. I just had a number I wore around my neck ~ #120 identified me. What you really need to know about me is that I am afraid of just about everything, especially walking on grass or walking on a leash. I came from a puppy mill and I prayed I would eventually end up in good place, like this rescue. I’ve been told I’ll never have to be a mom again. Matter of fact, I had a surgery to make sure that never happens again. I am 4 years old and my perfect family will be patient, kind, and will love me with all their hearts. Love, Sylvia, the former #120, a true beauty queen.

From her foster parents:  After being with us for a few weeks, “out of her shell” is an understatement. Sylvia was incredibly nervous when she first came to our house, but slowly started to figure out things.

Sylvia gets along great with other dogs, and loves to play. She has a lot of fun playing with toys, but doesn’t fully understand what is/isn’t considered a toy. Her personality can easily be compared to that of a big puppy. When it comes time to eat, Sylvia is so excited, she will hop, dance, jump on furniture, and clumsily trip over anything in her way.

Health wise, she is in great condition. She is not on any prescription medication, only a daily joint supplement. She currently has a cyst between her toes that we are working on with daily Epsom salt foot soaks, and should be better soon.
Senior Spotlight:
Ontos

You might wonder about my unique name. My former owner came from a long line of Marines who have all owned Bulldogs. All the dogs were named after something to do with the military. Many were named after some type of tank. The Ontos was a very special tank used by the Marines in the 50s and 60s. So I am proud to be a Marine Tank!

I am upset though that I am also a casualty. My family got a divorce and it seemed no one had time or a place for me. They knew I needed more time with people than they could provide, so I joined rescue.

I’m 9 years old, but you would never guess it. I am quite active for a dog my age. I believe in military fitness and have kept myself in tip-top shape. I am disciplined and well-behaved. I love to go on walks and do great on a leash.

From his foster family: Ontos continues to do so well at our house. He is very smart, and has learned to scratch at the backdoor when he wants in and outside. He is Foster Ma’s shadow, and he follows me around everywhere I go... literally everywhere! Foster Ma has learned to slow down and take her time knowing Ontos is around, sometimes he doesn’t see that I moved and I might close the door too fast on him, or he doesn’t know to watch out as I walk by because his eye sight is so bad. So, we have all learned to slow down, and make sure he is aware of his surroundings and we make sure he knows he is safe. You would never know he is 9 by the way he plays, runs and acts. He LOVES the mini human, and is so gentle around him. There is not enough good things we can say about Ontos. He is such a good loving boy, and has plenty of love left to give!

 Thanks for Giving Day Success!

Five Dangerous Halloween Candies

Halloween is associated with spooky haunted houses, pet Halloween costumes and most of all, Halloween candy! Certain types of candy can be toxic and very dangerous to pets. Below are are five dangerous Halloween candies for dogs and cats.

1. CANDY CORN & OTHER HIGH SUGAR CANDY
Candies that are made with pure sugar can cause severe gas and diarrhea. The sugar not only provides a great source of food for gut bacteria to indulge on, it can also pull water into the colon and cause a bad case of diarrhea.

2. CHOCOLATE COVERED RAISINS
These tasty treats combine two potentially deadly ingredients in dogs and cats. Chocolate is toxic to pets and can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea and seizures. Raisins (and other grape products) can cause severe kidney failure. The two of these combined is the ultimate toxic nightmare for pets. If your pet eats any chocolate covered raisins this Halloween, take them to your veterinarian immediately for treatment.

3. CANDY WITH WRAPPERS
When dogs get into the candy bowl, they don’t usually bother to unwrap the treats first. Plastic and foil wrappers pose a health risk since they can cause an obstruction in the intestines and irritate the lining of the GI tract. Sometimes, pets can pass the wrappers without a problem, but it is best to keep all wrapped treats away from pets just in case.

4. BITE-SIZE HARD CANDY
Hard candy often has a delicious taste to dogs. These treats pose a major choking hazard for pets. Hard candy becomes slippery when mixed with saliva and it can be inhaled into the trachea (wind pipe), causing a choking hazard. Be sure to keep these candies away from dogs and cats.

5. SUGAR-FREE GUM
This type of gum may contain Xylitol, a sugar-substitute. Xylitol is perfectly safe in people, but it can be deadly if ingested by a dog or cat. Xylitol causes a very severe drop in blood sugar that can happen within minutes after ingestion. Pets may become lethargic, unable to walk and start having seizures. If they survive the initial symptoms, they often will have severe liver damage and potentially fatal liver failure. This is the most dangerous type of Halloween candy for pets.

Keep your pet safe this Halloween by keeping all of your Halloween treats in a safe, secure place.
