Supporting our work

We have been BUSY here at Service Stars, and we love sharing all of the good work that our students have been doing. But first, we want to give a huge shout out to our fearless leader, Kelly Comings, for receiving the "Nonprofit Rising Star" award at last month's Charles River Regional Chamber Newton Business Awards. Congratulations, Kelly!

We're also excited to share that Service Stars is hosting our annual fundraising picnic next week. This is a great opportunity for our students to learn about the significance of fundraising and its impact on organizations. This year, we’ve decided to expand our silent auction to include our entire community through proxy bidding. Please visit this link to view our current silent auction items and place your bid. Our students will be monitoring the silent auction table and will write in your proxy bid, allowing you to participate in the fun!

Read ahead for a recap of our summer camp and September projects, what we'll work on this October, and more information on our upcoming programs. We hope to see you soon!

What we did last month

Our September theme was "Helping Other Kids," which included packing activity bags and dental kits for The Home for Little Wanderers. Thank you to Newton Corner Dental Care for supplying items for the dental kids, and for stopping by to teach some of our stars about the importance of oral hygiene and healthy habits.

We also continued packing more back-to-school snacks and picked more veggies from our garden to donate to the Newton Community Freedge.

Finally, we're thrilled to share some updates from our summer! Over two weeks in August, our campers:

  • Raised $930 at our carwash/lemonade stand to purchase inclusive playground equipment.
  • Assembled 300 meals at the Allston-Brighton Food Pantry.
  • Created 100 toiletry bags, crafts, and cards to distributed at distributed at the VA Hospital
  • Picked up 37lbs of trash from the Charles River
  • Helped five local restaurants become more "ocean friendly"

October Projects

Our theme this month is "Collecting for Others," and we'll be running a neighborhood food drive for the Kids Club Program at the Centre Street Food Pantry here in Newton.

We've started by distributing flyers around the neighborhood to raise awareness about our collection drive. During our family picnic next week, we will begin gathering food donations, followed by a neighborhood pick-up on October 15 to collect items left on doorsteps. The project will conclude on October 22 with a field trip to the Centre Street Food Pantry, where students will help pack donations into Kids Club Bags for local families.

Our October projects will help us answer: why are collection drives important, and what are the different ways we can collect items for people in need?

Thank you to our picnic sponsors and donors!
