National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)

This October marks the 78th National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). We celebrate NDEAM annually to commemorate the many contributions of people with disabilities to America’s workplaces and economy and to teach everyone about disability employment challenges.

Recognizing the importance of ensuring all people have equal opportunity to contribute their skills and talents, this year’s NDEAM theme is “Advancing Access and Equity.” Employers and employees in all industries can learn more about how to participate in National Disability Employment Awareness Month and ways they can promote its messages — during October and throughout the year — by visiting: https://www.dol.gov/agencies/odep/initiatives/ndeam/year-round.

Filipino American History Month (FAHM) was first celebrated in the United States in 1992, when the late Dr. Fred Cordova, along with his wife, Dr. Dorothy Laigo Cordova, founder of the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS), first introduced October as Filipino American History Month with a resolution from the FANHS National Board of Trustees to bring awareness of the significant role Filipinos have played in American history. In 2009, the U.S. Congress recognized October as Filipino American History Month.

Down Syndrome Awareness Month (DSAM) began in the 1980s and became an annual commemoration to raise awareness and celebrate the many abilities of our loved ones with Down syndrome. DSAM seeks to break down barriers and focus on promoting advocacy for people with Down syndrome. NDSS celebrates October in a different way each year and we invite you to get involved and spread the word.

The Annual National Bullying Prevention Month campaign was founded in 2006 by PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center to generate attention to the negative impact of bullying. The campaign is held during October and unites communities nationwide to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention.

Historically, bullying was viewed as "a childhood rite of passage" that "made kids tougher." But, the reality has always been that bullying can leave devastating and often long-term effects such as a loss of self-esteem, increased anxiety, and depression for those involved. This initiative, now recognized in communities across the country, has helped shift thinking away from bullying as a "rite of passage" and toward the knowledge that bullying can be prevented and stopped through education and awareness.
