Dear Parents and Guardians:
One or more cases of head lice have been found at Odle Middle School. Due to a few recently reported cases, I'd like to use this opportunity to remind all families of the importance of monitoring your child(ren)'s heads throughout the school year, whether notified of known cases of head lice or not. Due to the recent incidents of head lice at school, please check your child(ren)'s hair and all household members for 14 days. If each of us actively monitors our own family's heads regularly, we can help stop the spread of these bothersome little critters.
If live lice or nits (eggs) are found, please follow the directions below:
-
TREAT THE HAIR:
Consult your health care provider or pharmacist for recommended treatments. Lice and nits can be removed from the hair by the following methods:
-
NON-TOXIC PRODUCTS:
These products are non-toxic and may be purchased at pharmacies and some department stores. Follow directions carefully! They do not kill the lice or nits, but rather make it easier to remove them. You must comb out the lice and nits using the comb that comes with the product or a "Lice Meister" comb, which is very effective.
-
LICE KILLING PRODUCTS:
There are chemical products to kill the lice and nits, and they are sold in pharmacies. These products do not always kill all the lice and nits. Follow the directions very carefully and use with caution. These products are not to be used as a routine preventative measure. As with the previous method, lice and nits must be combed or picked out of hair.
-
TREAT THE ENVIRONMENT: Wash clothing, hats, coats, bath towels and bed linens as you normally would; dry in a hot dryer for at least 30 minutes. Remove the hair from and soak all combs and brushes in hot (120 degrees) soapy water. Vacuum carpets, upholstered furniture, mattresses, car seats and car upholstery. Any toys, pillows or clothing that cannot be laundered should be carefully vacuumed or placed in plastic bags for two weeks.
The only cure for head lice is the removal of all lice and nits from the head. Checking for lice should be done by all families (with known cases of lice or not) routinely throughout the year and on every head in the house.
Remember...every person with head lice must be treated.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Fletcher, BSN, RN
