Events and Announcements in the Church and in the Community
Are you busy yet?
Of course you are! It's Advent - a time of waiting and expectation in theory - but for many of us it's a time of WAY TOO MANY THINGS. So please relax and enjoy:

  • All the many gifts you've been given already
  • The sounds, sights, smells and chilly air this time of year generates
  • Memories
  • The story of Jesus' incarnation: truly human, truly divine

And if relaxing with these things still seems to be a galaxy far, far away maybe it is time for gathering together here at church or in the community, in some of the many forms outlined below. Spend some delightful time with the Body of Christ you are a part of and share here at First Pres here in Durango.

Remember, these email letters should help inform, NOT overwhelm. So prayerfully choose those things that that you feel can enhance your life this season. Write down in your calendar some of the things that we do that strike your fancy or even that you get excited about. Careful discernment about sacred ways to spend this time is powerful and surprisingly can lead you to a new kind of refreshment - one that's anchored in God's gift of Jesus. it can last your entire life.

See you Soon!

Poinsettia Club
Deadline: SUNDAY!
As Christmas approaches, we're closing out our collection of donations for the Poinsettia Club, an annual holiday gift-giving project where you can honor a loved one by name in the bulletins at Christmas. We choose to be good earth stewards and only use a few poinsettias to decorate the church. Still we invite you to join this Club and make a donation in honor or memory of someone you love. Donations will go to a designated project in the wider church and some modest needs Team Worship has identified in our congregation. Donation forms are available in the pews or by clicking here The deadline for gifts is this SUNDAY, December 15.   Names and honorees will appear in the bulletins closer to Christmas. And MANY thanks!

We will be departing from FPCD at 8am on December 14 and driving to Newcomb where we will celebrate a service, enjoy great food, and watch the kids open their presents. Contact Pat Wainwright or Jon Powell or let Bill Postler know and then meet at our church by 8:00am.

The Christmas party with our Navajo friends at the Assembly of God Church in Newcomb is for BOTH congregations so please plan to attend!

The Children's Christmas Pageant happens this Sunday, December 15

All the children who plan to be involved in the pageant on December 15 have come together and are working hard to make this a special event. This year the FPC Youth's

Christmas Pageant is called
“Just A Little Peace at Christmas”
Based on Sharon Kay Chatwell’s Original Version as adapted by our very own Kristin Smith!

Should be a STELLAR amount of FUN!

Thanks for Ringing In the Season, FPC

A big thank you from the Deacons to all the 25 hardy people who volunteered this year as Bell Ringers for the Salvation Army. We had 5 more time slots to fill this year than in past years, but you folks made it work. You had to stand out in the cold most days instead of inside City Market, so here’s to you for persevering. The people in need across LaPlata County will thank you tremendously.

Shop With A Cop

For over 25 years the Durango Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 8 has hosted our Shop With A Cop event in Durango. This event pairs local children in need with a law enforcement officer and together they shop for clothing and toys that the child wouldn’t otherwise receive. Through generous donations we were able to support close to 150 local children last year from La Plata County. This year Cop With A Cop will occur Dec 19 in Durango. We will spend an average of $150 per child, approximately $100 on clothing and $50 on toys. We ask for your help in raising money for this program and in making these children’s holidays a little brighter. For further information on how to donate   click here . Suggestion: Save postage and turn around time. Donations can be dropped off at the Customer Service Window of the PD just three blocks away: corner of East Second Avenue and Tenth Street.
Do not Steal!
Or better put, we've been running out of treats (both the healthy ones and all those great sweets) on Sundays BEFORE Coffee Hour.

Two solutions have been suggested:

  • Let's all donate more treats for coffee hour each week (sign-up in Westminster Hall - or just bring some to church!)

  • Keep out (parents and kids alike) of the kitchen before church, please! Ask yourselves, "What would JESUS do?"

Thanks !
