A Musical Sendoff for Jacob Craig
(Don't Worry. He's Coming Back.)
It’s been only six and a half years since Jacob Craig came to town to take over as Director of Music and Arts at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach, but in that time he’s made a lifetime’s worth of impact on this community.
Over those years, I’ve had many chats and interviews with Craig and, hoarder that I am, was able to dig up some old notes. On Nov. 9, 2012, I wrote: “Keep an eye on three talented young men of music in Vero Beach, Ryan Kasten, Jason Hobratschk, and now Jacob Craig, who was recently installed as music director at First Presbyterian Church on Royal Palm Boulevard. Each one has his separate musical responsibilities but I’ve been told that the triumvirate is mutually supportive and inspiring. I’m seeing collaboration in my crystal ball.” Kasten and Hobratschk, both still prominent voices in the Vero Beach music community, were the friends who convinced Craig to apply for the position.
The collaboration has stretched far beyond the “triumvirate” to include almost any opportunity for Craig to share a stage or a piano bench around the county. One of those opportunities was founding the Vero Beach Pipes and Drums, where he is Pipe Major and an instructor. Drum Major John Thompson said, “If Jacob put his mind to it, he could very well be a world champion piper … he is that good.” The organization plans a new program for the next school year, a Juvenile Pipe Band, with Craig working with 4th and 5th graders at Beachland Elementary school. Thompson said, “These kids will be getting free lessons and musical equipment in both pipes and percussion. Jacob loves the community here in Vero and we as a band will do what ever it takes to expand the culture of our Vero Beach.”
Jerry Garrett, chairman of the Worship, Music, and Arts committee at First Presbyterian Church that made the decision to hire Craig, said on June 9, at 4 p.m., the sanctuary will be the stage for "A Celebration Concert - An Oxford Ovation" for Craig “as he heads off to Oxford to finish his Doctoral Degree.” He added, “Jacob's talents have brought so much to the First Presbyterian Church music program. Our Chancel Choir has grown and the music they perform is more difficult than ever before. He has started a Youth String Orchestra, the first in Vero Beach to be part of our normal Sunday worship.” Garrett’s wife, Judy, sings in the church choir and added, “We are so blessed to have Jacob as our Director Music and Arts. He not only fills our church with his beautiful music but also fills our hearts with his kind, gentle, and loving spirit.” Craig recently took the Youth String Orchestra to a national competition in Orlando and brought home a Superior rating and First Place overall award.
Craig is also the director of the Silver Tones Community Chorus and has developed a choir at ACTS of Indian River Estates. One of the choristers at IRE, Connie Herr, said, “Two years ago I approached him about conducting a chorus of residents at Indian River Estates(IRE), thinking that I would have a hard sell. ‘Can’t think of anything I’d enjoy more,’ was his initial response.” And then there are the hugs. Herr added, “Of course music is his prime talent, but what about his knowledge of art, his compassion for people and most of all HIS HUGS?”
There’s no denying that he, his church family, and the Vero Beach community were a match that was destined to be. Craig, a 2019 recipient of a Laurel Award presented by the Cultural Council of Indian River County, is in the final stages of his pursuit of a personal dream. “I will be going to Oxford University to complete the class portion of my doctoral studies through the Graduate Theological Foundation. … After these courses are accredited, the Graduate Theological Foundation will issue a diploma.” Craig will be in class at Oxford for two weeks this summer. He said, “I am so fortunate to be in a place where I can learn how to be better every day, and being able to study formally allows for enormous upgrades in my skill set and the development of expertise so that I can better serve this community.”
The 4 p.m. concert June 9 is open to all and free. A love offering will be taken to defray expenses. Performing at the concert will be: First Presbyterian Chancel Choir, Bell Choir, and String Orchestra; ACTS Chorus of Indian River Estates; and Vero Beach Pipes and Drums. Garrett said, “Music will include God Bless America, You Make Me Feel So Young, Sunshine On My Shoulders, Reverberations, Fairest Lord Jesus, Serenade for Strings, Highland Cathedral, Itchy Fingers Set, and Amazing Grace.”
Garrett said, “Jacob is always exploring and developing new programs. But one of his greatest qualities is his love for people. He knows that he would not be who he is or what he has accomplished if it weren't for all the love and support from the people in his life. Through Jacob's love of music, a musical ministry to worship God is stronger than ever.”

In the space of one week, Jureit Musicales will bring three outstanding performances to its Sewall’s Point audiences. Thursday, June 6 at 7 p.m., violinist Brooke Gunter will perform her senior recital before heading off to Meadowmount School of Music for the summer. She’ll then go on to Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh in the fall. With her in this recital will be her brother, Brandon, cello; her sister, Ava, violin; and pianist Dr. Marie Jureit-Beamish.
They will perform works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Cesar Franck, and virtuoso showpieces by Fritz Kreisler.
Sunday, June 9 at 3 p.m., Mexican-born composer Samuel Zyman will be in the house as the audience is treated to performers showcasing his works for flute. Zyman is a long-time faculty member at the Juilliard School in New York. Jureit-Beamish said, “Since 1993, Zyman has contributed ten works to the flute repertoire, and through them, one can hear his development as a composer.”
Mexican flutist Jonathan Borja, a frequent guest for the Musicales, has worked closely with Zyman and for this concert and will be joined by pianist Lindsay Garritson, her sister, cellist Ashley Garritson, and flutist Jureit-Beamish.
Jureit-Beamish said, “Filled with jazzy harmonies, heart-warming melodies, and Latin rhythmic vitality, these works encompass Zyman’s musical style and are certain to captivate Treasure Coast audiences as they have the world over.” On the program: First Sonata for flute and piano (1994), the Fantasia Mexicana for two flutes and piano (2004), the Sonata No. 2 for flute and piano (2016), and the Suite de La Mancha for flute, cello, and piano (2016).
Just added for June 10, 7 p.m., is a program by concert pianist Lindsay Garrison, “From France to Australia: Poetry and Fire! An evening of musical poetry and virtuosity.” The program will include music by Chopin, Granados, and Carl Vine.

Norman Van Aken at Vero Beach Wine & Food Festival
In a few days, you'll see festivities happening in all corners of Vero Beach as the Vero Beach Wine & Film Festival takes over the town. It's the fourth year for this very busy event and it's had rave reviews from filmmakers, according to founder Jerusha Stewart.
The only thing famed Miami chef Norman Van Aken knew about Vero Beach before he agreed to take part in the Vero Beach Wine & Film Festival was that “it is a nice place in Florida, so I wanted to check it out.” He’ll have the perfect chance to do just that when he arrives for the opening event of VBWFF, a “culinary soirée” June 6.
The evening combines culinary with cinematic for a presentation by Devour! at the
Kimpton Vero Beach Hotel and Spa
. Event organizer Chef Michael Howell invited Van Aken; Chef Winston Guerrero - Cobalt, Vero Beach; Chef Clayton Charles Carnes - Choyo Soy Cocina , West Palm Beach; and Chef Malka Espinel - Timo, Miami, to participate. The idea behind the evening is for each of the celebrity chefs to be inspired be a short film.
When Van Aken learned that someone he knew, Renée Frigo, would have a film at the festival, he was in. He said, “Filmmaker Renée Frigo is a person I’ve known for years. I knew she was an ardent supporter of my dear friend (brother) Charlie Trotter’s work. Then I learned of her film, which she shared with me. Having been such a part of Charlie’s life a film was not necessary for me to want to come and support her film in and of itself. But it certainly adds another dimension that is quite special. As is she.”
Back in the early days of Cuban-American and fusion cuisine and innovative chefs in 1990s Miami, Van Aken, Allen Susser, Mark Militello, and Douglas Rodriguez ruled the dining world. Van Aken recalled, “It was a very interesting time when it seemed the four of us, (and occasionally one or more others) were in magazine and newspaper articles which spoke of the type of cuisine we each were celebrating in our various restaurants. At one point I suggest we all join in and write a cookbook together. … The name of the corporate entity was ‘The Mango Gang.’ No one could have imagined the name would follow us for these many years. We have all gone our individual ways, but some mythic stories remain. The book never got written. But I have now written seven.”
One of Van Aken’s latest ventures is in Time Out Market Miami, a 20,000 square foot food hall recently opened on Miami Beach. He said,
“The original one opened in Lisbon about three years ago. More are opening around the world. … I am one of the three “Signature Chefs” at Time Out Market Miami. We will have two venues there. “K’West”…. showcasing my love of the food of Key West… and ‘Beach Pie’ my pizza concept the directors of TOMM asked me to create.”
Van Aken now shares his expertise through a cooking school, In the Kitchen with Norman Van Aken, in the Wynnewood Arcade, Miami. His website,
www.normanvanaken.com
, has information on the school and a lot more.
The VBWFF’s calendar is stuffed with wine tastings, screenings, and premier events at several Vero Beach venues. For the first time, the South Yuba River Citizens League’s Wild & Scenic Film Festival will be part of the Vero Beach programming. Each year, SYRCL programmers “curate the best in environmental documentaries, shorts, and adventure films for our flagship festival in Nevada City, California.” Details of all the events offered June 6-9 and the passes available are on the website,
VBWFF.com

Port St. Lucie Musician Aubrey Flink
Aubrey Flink, a Port St. Lucie graduate of Olivet Private School, with dual enrollment at Indian River State College, is on her way to fulfilling her dream, with some help from local organizations that fund scholarship programs each year. Flink is attending Stetson University for a Bachelor’s Degree in Music with an Outside Field in Business Administration, she said.
Her principal instrument is piano but Flink has played cello with the Treasure Coast Youth Symphony. “Eventually, at Stetson, I plan to join the university orchestra for fall of 2019,” she said. Her piano studies began with Maribel Soriano at Little Prodigy School of Music. Then it was on to Palm Beach Atlantic University’s Preparatory Department with Marcio Bezzera. Approaching her final year in high school, Flink began her ongoing studies with Marie Jureit-Beamish. At Stetson she studies with Sean Kennard.
Helping pay for her undergraduate years of college is an impressive list of scholarships Flink has been awarded: Treasure Coast Music Teachers Association Honors Recital Senior Scholarship, Treasure Coast Youth Symphony Merit Award, Adrian M. Sample Scholarship, Chester C. Wynne Memorial Scholarship, Bright Futures Medallion Scholarship, Duckwitz Talent Scholarship, and other merit scholarship awards.
As a high school senior, Flink applied to and was accepted by seven universities. Then came the auditions, all successful, with a bonus, she said. “Through the auditions, I met a lot of inspiring professors along the way … .”
Flink is grateful to the teachers who have brought her to this point in her life. “Mrs. Maribel Soriano … gave me the opportunities to participate in a variety of performances around the area, … which helped me immensely with confidence in performing and competing as a musician. Dr. Marcio Bezzera … helped me to progress to the next level, which helped me compete in my first two concerto competitions.
“
As a teacher and mentor, (Jureit-Beamish) has helped me progress to a point I thought I would not be able to achieve. Every time I leave our lessons, I feel greatly inspired, thoroughly educated, and ready to practice with new motivation.” And Mr. Kennard has helped her to look at the music in a new way, she said.
Flink has some favorite composers and music she’d choose if asked to build a concert program. “I would include my most favorite pieces not restricted to just piano compositions. However, that would be tough, because I have so many favorites.
Violin Partita No.2 in D minor, BWV 1004: V. Chaccone
by Johann Sebastian Bach would start the program. Following that would be
String Quintet in C Major Op. 29, “Storm”
by Ludwig van Beethoven,
Aufforderung zum Tanze, Op.65
by Carl Maria von Weber, and
"Ständchen", D 889
by Franz Schubert. After intermission, would be
Rondo Capriccioso, Op. 14
by Felix Mendelssohn
,
and then, finally,
Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23
by Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky. Although the Tchaikovsky concerto is among the more well-known piano concertos, it holds a special place in my heart.”
Flink is on Facebook but does not have a website. She can sometimes be heard playing in one of Martin County’s Jureit Musicales, seen in photo.

ROAD TRIP! Mount Dora, Part 1
An old high school buddy emailed recently to tell me about a day trip she and her sister, visiting from Arizona, were planning. They had booked a Mimosa Brunch excursion on the Colebrookdale Railroad. A post-excursion review this week gave it an enthusiastic thumbs up.
Since I've restricted Arts Blast Road Trip segments to Florida, I'm not suggesting readers head for Pennsylvania to take a train ride. I know there are a few Pennsylvania and New Jersey Arts Blast readers, so if you happen to be up that way, here's the link:
www.colebrookdalerailroad.com
I had heard about a train excursion in Mt. Dora, a perennial favorite destination for Floridians, so I put it out to Facebook friends and they came up with some reviews and recommendations.
The train: Nadine Winter said, "
I’ve taken the train between Tavares and Mt. Dora, and it was a fine ride, but nothing to rave about." She's wondering if the weekend brunch trips and special events might make for a better train ride experience. I'm guessing Jill McDermott's experience was a special event ride when her son was younger. She said, "Well, kind of. It was during a 'Day Out With Thomas the Tank Engine' event."
Katherine Bauman ventured aboard for the Halloween train ride, "
and it was fun, but as mentioned above nothing to rave about." A walking tour on that same visit did get a positive review, but a Christmas visit rang the bell for Bauman. "I went to Mount Dora before Christmas one year and it was great! Decorations were beautiful. All the shops were decked out. Definitely puts you in the holiday spirit!"
Water tours were the big hit with the friends who responded.Kathy Edwards said the sunset cruise on Lake Dora was fabulous! "It was a large pontoon boat that seats about 20-25 people. We were out for an hour and saw some beautiful wildlife, including an eagle." Edwards suggests following the lead of some of the the others on that tour: bring your own snacks and liquids. "Refreshments consisted of buying a bottle of water!"
She combined the sunset cruise with a Christmas visit and had the best of both. "The sunset was spectacular but ... the best part for me was seeing the town all lit up (for Christmas). They do an amazing job of decorating." Bauman's party did the canal tour and she recommends it. She also provided a link for those considering a December visit,
http://www.mountdorachristmas.com/
.
There's a big caveat about booking early, including accommodations. As you might imagine, Mt. Dora attracts crowds all year but especially in the holiday season. There's the Polar Express Train Ride, the annual self-driving Christmas Tour of Homes put on by the Women's Committee of Fine Arts, and even a Sunset Seaplane Tour. What a sight the Christmas lights must be from the air! Mt. Dora has lots to consider: arts, crafts, green markets, festivals, antiques, and natural beauty.
