Residents have about one week left to offer input on proposals for future improvements at Veterans Memorial Park and on local recreational marijuana regulations being considered by the City Council next week.

The Veterans Memorial Park Master Plan proposals will remain open for input through Friday, Feb. 12. The proposals offer initial options for integrating 20.25 acres of adjacent land purchased from the Sierra Vista Unified School District last year and map out future improvements throughout the park.

Comments regarding recreational marijuana regulations can be submitted in advance of the City Council's regular meeting on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 5 p.m. Faced with a tight timeline to enact local regulations before the state's early application period for recreational marijuana retail licenses ends in March, the City Council can take final action on the issue on Thursday.

Applicatons and input sought for CDBG dollars

The City of Sierra Vista is seeking community input and applications from eligible organizations as it plans how to use its next allocation of Community Development Block Grant funds.

The City's 2021 Annual Action Plan will cover July 1, 2021, through June 30, 2022. Community members and organizations may offer input on local housing and community development needs at a virtual public meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 18, and at a public hearing before the City Council on Thursday, March 11. Learn more in the Notice of CDBG Funding Availability.

Nonprofit organizations and other eligible entities are also invited to submit applications for CDBG funding. Applications are due by March 5 at 4 p.m.

Community Development Block Grant dollars are provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. CDBG dollars must benefit low- and moderate-income people and areas, alleviate slum and blight, or address an urgent need. For more information, go the City's CDBG webpage.

Extraordinary Vigilance

While new COVID-19 cases have begun to decline from their recent peak, it's important that residents remain vigilant to slow its spread on Super Bowl Sunday.

For many, that means watching the big game on Sunday with a smaller group than normal. Please avoid gatherings with people outside your household and continue practicing safe distancing, using face coverings, and washing your hands often when you do go out.

Uncommon Community

Registration is now open for the Spring Futsal League hosted by the Coronado Athletic Club in partnership with the City of Sierra Vista.

The league will begin outdoors due to guidelines in place to slow the spread of COVID-19. The league will run from March to May and children born between 2002-2016 are eligible to play. The cost is $85 per player.

City Announcements

Crack sealing will begin along Fry Boulevard on Monday. Please drive with care, watch for traffic control signs, and exercise caution around workers and equipment. Learn more.

All City facilities will be closed on Monday, Feb. 15, in observance of Presidents' Day. Monday trash will be collected on Tuesday, Feb. 16, and Tuesday's trash pickup will shift to Wednesday, Feb. 17. There will be no special pickups on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
