CULTURAL AFFAIRS AND TOURISM OFFICE
Advancing the quality of life for residents and enhancing the visitor experience

Whether you are a lifelong resident of Mount Pleasant or you're just visiting the area, chances are you have probably enjoyed at least one of the Town's 44 event days held every year. Perhaps you've celebrated the local seafood industry by attending the Blessing of the Fleet & Seafood Festival, or you've picked up some fresh fruits and vegetables at the Farmer's Market, or you've welcomed Santa Claus to town at the Christmas Light Parade & Tree Lighting. Whatever event you have already enjoyed or will enjoy in the future - there is something for everyone in the Town of Mount Pleasant. The Office of Cultural Affairs and Tourism coordinates this diverse offering of events, and in doing so, encourages strong community-building and business enrichment opportunities throughout Mount Pleasant.

The Office of Cultural Affairs and Tourism (formerly the Community Development and Tourism Office) is headed up by the Cultural Affairs and Tourism Officer, Ashley Richardson. Including Ms. Richardson, the office consists of only four staff members, one of whom joined the office just this past year. The mission of the Cultural Affairs and Tourism Office, or CAT, is "To advance the quality of life for residents and enhance the visitor experience by fostering an environment dedicated to marketing, facilitating, and executing artistic, cultural, and tourism initiatives."  

Coordinating the Town's numerous special events is just one of the many responsibilities of CAT. Other functions include:
  • Develop and market tourism, hospitality, park, cultural and event initiatives
  • Supervise and coordinate:
    • Culture, Arts, and Pride Commission
    • Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee
  • Manage venues, parks and special event permits
  • Direct creative image and presentation of the town
Even with a small number of staff members, this office generates a tremendous amount of work every year. Here are just a few of their statistics from the past year:
  • 656 Visitor packets compiled and distributed
  • 31 Accommodations Tax applications processed 
  • 6 Facebook pages, 1 Twitter account, 1 Instagram account, and 1 website managed and constantly updated
  • 44 Special event days organized and hosted

Latest CAT News and Events
Tourism = Economic Development
Thanks to the marketing efforts of the Cultural Affairs and Tourism Office, the Town of Mount Pleasant has enjoyed stable increases in Hospitality Tax and Accommodations Tax revenue over the past few years.

"It is important for people to remember that tourism is economic development" said Ashley Richardson.

A community that attracts tourists also attracts new investment. Local businesses flourish, new businesses want to open, and investment is seen throughout the community. Economic development creates an improved quality of life for all community members and helps to ensure the success of the community for the long-term. The Town uses the revenue generated from the Hospitality and Accommodations taxes to complete community improvement projects and fund public safety initiatives and tourism-related expenditures.


 
All About Art
The Town of Mount Pleasant is all about the arts. The Culture, Arts, and Pride Commission, with the support of CAT, is heading up the following events and programs designed to promote artistic expression, art appreciation and education, civic pride, and community beautification.

Mayor's Office Art Program

Artists are invited to submit photos of completed artwork for display on a rotating basis in Mayor Page's office. The art remains on display on a wall behind the Mayor's desk for two months. The objective is to promote an awareness of local artists, encourage interaction amongst the artist community, local businesses and residents and to foster community pride. Writer's Workshop

At this two-day workshop, local actors, directed by local directors, will stage a reading of the writers' scenes-in-progress, and the writers will receive constructive critiques from all workshop participants to help them revise and improve their finished work. The next Writer's Workshop will be held in March 2015. Applications are available online.

 

 

Pocket Park Sculptures

CAP partners with the College of Charleston Sculpture Department to promote public art by displaying two sculptures in the pocket park on Coleman Boulevard. The sculptures are selected by CAP and rotate annually.The new sculptures will be selected in February.

Farmers Market Restroom Facilities
Permanent and ADA compliant restroom facilities will soon be constructed at the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market Pavilion. The facilities are scheduled to be opened in time for the busy summer season. Click here to learn more! 
 

Local Restaurant Map
Looking for a new restaurant to try? Have you heard of a great place, but don't know where it's located? Well, CAT has a solution for you. Staff recently designed and printed the first ever local restaurant guide. This handy map shows you all the best places to wine and dine in Mount Pleasant. Copies of this map are also being distributed to all local hotels. Pick up your copy at Town Hall today or access it online here.

Blessing of the Fleet & Seafood Festival

Memorial Waterfront Park


Since 1987 this event has been held to support and honor our local seafood heritage. Participants enjoy a boat parade and ceremonial blessing of the shrimping/fishing fleet, savory seafood samplings from local vendors, live music, shag dancing, and other family-friendly activities.
