Message from the Director

Hello all,

I am sure we have all had a busy start to 2024. In OGS, we have already reviewed and tracked submission of more than 250 applications of all types. With the temperatures dropping and wind picking up again, it is hard to believe we are near the end of March. Welcome to Spring!

In this March edition of our OGS newsletter, I will provide some office updates, LOI guidance, and more information on our upcoming system updates and proposal reminders.

Office Updates

The Office of Grant Support is recruiting for the role of Senior Grants Specialist. Join our team and apply here.

Reminder: Bethany Oates (consultant with Attain) has completed her project with OGS. Her last day with Einstein was 2/29/2024. Please contact Neil or me for any issues with Prior Approval, ASSIST, JIT, NCE, Carryover and Closeout (FIS).

Please ensure that your communication and especially any required clarifications from sponsor contacts routes through OGS. As the Authorized Organization Representatives (AOR), we will review, provide feedback and offer our countersignature and/or concurrence for all direct sponsor communications.

Letter of Intent (LOI):

If you are submitting an LOI, please share the sponsor and funding type with your department administrator and OGS even in cases where the sponsor does not require institutional support or signature. We are moving toward more proactive vetting of sponsors terms and conditions to ensure awards will not introduce risk for publications and/or intellectual property and licensing. OGS and OBBD are working collaboratively to identify unacceptable terms and conditions that introduce undue risk for the institution and individual investigators. We will be creating a list of problematic sponsors to share across the campus.

Upcoming Form and System updates:

In collaboration with multiple units, the Cayuse Supplemental form is in the final edit and review stage. This form will be more streamlined to support the efficient communication of required information for applications. This will be circulated and posted once the update is complete.

Cayuse will be updated to have a new field to capture Early Approval/Submission Requests for applications. This is designed to alert OGS of plans for early submission of applications to assist with our review prioritization and workflow. Please continue to use the short title in Cayuse424 to identify the actual deadline of the application.

We are happy to share the launch of OGS Office Hours. Office hours will be every Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30-1:30 and 3-4PM. We look forward to seeing you!

SPINPlus Portal Workshop will be held next week 3/28 from 11AM-12:15PM. Please register and join us on zoom at this link.

Reminder:

RPPR: For awarded continuations of incoming subcontracts, foundations, associations, and industry projects, the creation of a new SP proposal record is NOT required. The RF Award Set-up team (Linda Lally & Latesha Paisley) award set up template has been revised to ask for the Cayuse project number (A23-XXXX). The RF Award Set-up team will proceed with their review and inputting the award in Cayuse SP & Banner.

Non-competing continuation records are still required for NIH RPPRs and non-NIH continuations where submission to the sponsor is needed after OGS review.

If you are submitting an application through ProposalCentral, please ensure that you communicate with and select OGS institutional contact, Indranil Basu for institutional signoff. You will need to add the institutional contact to the application for us to sign the application if required in the portal.

Cayuse training will continue to be available monthly by invitation. Please contact OGS to request inclusion (OGS@einsteinmed.edu).

OGS is reviewing, updating and creating new training content. We will release more information on training schedule directly.

Please continue to reach out to OGS for all your research administrative related inquiries. We look forward to continuing to provide a high level of support for your applications as well as clear updates on sponsor requirements and guidance to maximize funding success!

Sincerely,

M. Caitlin McKenna

Non-Federal Funding Opportunities

Health Equity Research Grant

Due: March 27, 2024

Amount: $200,000 over two years

The objective is to support research projects that promote equity, inclusivity, and evidence-based approaches to overcome the barriers faced by marginalized communities with a focus on ovarian cancers and/or related gynecologic cancers. There must be a clearly defined research project with aims related to health equity. Projects for community programs without a defined research component are not eligible. The primary review criteria will be the likelihood that the investigators can leverage this funding to explore ideas specifically related to reducing health disparities, with long-term impact for the field. The ideal project would provide resources to promote the generation of data, which would be capable of performing high-impact research and competing successfully for additional funding, and the authorship of scientific publications. The proposed projects may be new research or part of ongoing research. Research areas include but are not limited to identifying and addressing factors that contribute to health disparities in ovarian cancer; improving access to quality care, diagnostics, and treatment options for underserved communities; exploring impact of disparities on disease progression and survival rates; and investigating the genetic and molecular factors influencing ovarian cancer disparities and potential therapies.

Eligibility: PIs at all stages of their careers are eligible to apply. Applicants must have either their PhD, ScD, MD, or other doctoral degree at time of application.

Young Investigator Award

Due: April 15, 2024

Amount: $275,000 over 3 years

The foundation seeks applications from early-career basic scientists, medical oncologists, pathologists, urologists, radiologists, radiation oncologists, public health experts, bioinformaticians, bioengineers, or professionals from any other field that could contribute to the end of potentially lethal prostate cancer. Applicants may be working in basic, translational, computational, or clinical research and need not be trained specifically in prostate cancer research to be highly competitive. Access to and real-time interaction with a clinical environment and translational prostate cancer physician-scientists is highly desired. “Small step” or incremental proposals are usually non-competitive. Highly innovative basic science programs will be carefully considered, but priority will be given to “bench to bedside” translational research proposals with the potential to deliver near term benefit to patients. Young investigators working on prostate cancer health disparities to apply are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants traditionally under-represented in science and medicine are highly encouraged. Research proposals addressing disparities in care experienced by patients with prostate cancer may focus on implementation research in various populations (e.g., urban vs rural, racial, geographic, or financial) or in drivers of care and outcome disparities that could potentially be addressed through changes in policy, advocacy, or education.

Eligibility: Must be within six years following completion of a professional degree or subsequent mentored academic or clinical training program. Must hold title of Postdoctoral Fellow, Instructor, Research Associate, Assistant Professor or equivalent. Must be under the direct supervision of a mentor(s).
