Virginia Partners in Prayer & Prevention Community Health Champions Event a Success.
Author: Office of Health Equity | August 30, 2017

Chantilly Baptist Church hosted the Virginia Partners in Prayer & Prevention (P3) Community Health Champions "Healthy People, Healthy Churches" community health forum on August 19. The event is the first of a series of faith-based events planned for Health Champions throughout the Commonwealth.

Health Champions support Virginia's Plan for Well Being and the Office of Health Equity by engaging faith based congregations on a variety of public health topics.  The Champions undergo a 5-week training covering health equity, health disparities, environmental policies, partnerships and event planning, followed by bimonthly remote resource sessions. The Virginia Department of Health, the American Heart Association, Balm In Gilead, the Department of Homeland Security, Alzheimer's Association, FDA, BBB are among the many organizations that participate in training and resource sessions.

Health Champions also connect communities by engaging members in a variety of projects.  For their first project, the Champions worked with community members to create murals depicting health in each community.  Champions followed this up by coordinating a Commonwealth-wide "Community Health Conversation" with faith and community leaders.

This "Healthy People, Healthy Churches" event celebrated the work that Health Champion Dr. Donna Taylor, of first Agape Baptist Community of Faith, and Brian Ellis, of Chantilly Baptist Church, accomplished. Dr. Taylor and Mr. Ellis also coordinated the event with P3 Project Coordinator Veronica Cosby. Several professionals spoke at this event. Stephanie Smith, a Senior Public Health Nutritionist with Fairfax County Health Department Women, Infants and Children program (WIC) discussed nutrition and prevention of heart disease. James Finney, a Protective Security Advisor with the United States Department of Homeland Security, instructed attendees on how to handle active shooter situations. Simone Warrick-Bell, Licensed Professional Counselor, provided information on Mental Health, Depression and Anxiety. Additionally, Augustine Kamana, Sandy Ma and Binbin Yang from Fairfax County Health attended to provide support.

Virginia Partners in Prayer & Prevention events connect faith-based congregations fostering healthy communities.  For any questions, contact P3 Project Coordinator Veronica Cosby at  Veronica.Cosby@vdh.virginia.gov . The next event will be held in Lynchburg, VA on Oct. 7, 2017.

2017 Summer Brown Bag Health Equity Training Series Concludes as a Big Success!
Author: OHE Staff | August 30, 2017

In support of VDH's strategic plan goals around health equity and population health, the Office of Health Equity (OHE) recently concluded the 2017 Summer Brown Bag Health Equity Training Series.  The Summer Series offered 16 video screening opportunities and four training sessions during July and August!   The training, geared towards a variety of audiences, taught staff about the systemic root factors that impact health and identified interventions and partners that together can improve the health and well-being of all Virginians. The Summer Series showcased several video segments and a Ted MD Talk exploring health inequities, which are the root causes of health disparities.  Following the screenings, VDH staff and community partners held panel discussions covering innovative partnerships and projects that use a population health focus to support VA's Plan for Well-being. The training series explored how factors, such as economics, education, culture, and segregation, shape our health in the neighborhoods where we live, learn, work, play and pray.  Augustine Doe and Justin Rinaldi of OHE worked diligently to secure speakers, handle logistics, and moderate this four-part training series.   The series esteemed panel members included:
  • Anna Riggin,  Social Epidemiologist, Office of Health Equity,
  • Scott Andrews-Weckerly, Family Transitional Coach, Richmond Health District,
  • Tiffany Cox,  Community Health and Prevention Supervisor, Crater Health District
  • Augustine Doe,  Health Equity Specialist, Office of Health Equity
  • Nancy Bell, Population Health Manager, West Piedmont Health District,
  • Janet Wright, School Age Health Specialist,  Office of Family Health Services
  • Karen Wells, East End Community Outreach Manager, American Heart Association
  • Sarah Birckhead, Regional Coordinator, Richmond City Health Department
Special thanks to VDH staff that attended the screenings, training s and participated in the discussions!  The OHE welcomes suggestions for future training topics.
