Employee Spotlight - Mocha, CAL FIRE’s Ignitable Liquid (IGL) Detection K9


This edition's Employee spotlight is Mocha, an Accelerant Detection Canine for CAL FIRE - Office of the State Fire Marshal's Arson and Bomb Unit. This chocolate lab has a nose for justice—able to detect even trace amounts of liquid accelerants at fire investigation scenes. Working alongside Arson and Bomb Investigator Charlie Elder, Mocha helps uncover the truth.

Celebrate Responsibly: Prevent Firework Injuries

This July 4 holiday, take time to celebrate responsibly with your loved ones! According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), an estimated 9,600 people suffer fireworks-related injuries severe enough to require emergency room treatment every year. While children were the largest group affected, at least a third of those injured were adults aged 25-44. Follow the tips below and stay safe.

  • Never attempt to re-light or “fix” fireworks
  • Do not wear loose fitting clothing while lighting fireworks
  • Never carry fireworks in your pockets
  • Fireworks are not toys


  • Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse
  • Back up several feet immediately after lighting a firework
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person
  • Never experiment with fireworks

Update to the Fire Fighter 1A and 2A (Structural) Curriculum


State Fire Training (SFT) has announced an update to the Fire Fighter 1A and 2A (Structural) curriculum, aligning it with the 2024 edition of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1010 Standard on Professional Qualifications for Firefighters.


The revised curriculum, effective July 1, 2025, includes updates to Certification Training Standards (CTS), skill sheets, course plans, application forms, and training resources. New documents and information can be found on the Fire Fighter webpage. The Fire Fighter 1 & 2 (2019) curriculum and exams will be phased out starting July 2026, with complete retirement by July 1, 2027.

2025 Hazardous Liquid Pipeline Safety Seminar in Long Beach


Earlier this month, CAL FIRE-Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) hosted the 2025 Hazardous Liquid Pipeline Safety Seminar in Long Beach. During this two-day seminar, CAL FIRE – OSFM Pipeline Safety Division, Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, National Association of State Fire Marshals, and industry experts discussed State and Federal requirements for testing and evaluation of hazardous liquid pipelines, Incident Management Team processes and points of contact, Regulatory updates, Pipeline Emergency Responders Initiative (PERI), the CO2 Training Trailer, and Hydrostatic testing. 

National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS) Transition Webinar Series
