Straws to Stay, but Boca Raton Encourages Voluntary Change
|
|
At a recent City Council workshop, the Boca Raton City Council decided to encourage voluntary reductions of single-use plastics, including straws, utensils, drinkware and plastic bottles, instead of banning straws like neighboring cities.
With a "lead by example" motto, the City has launched a new initiative called The Coastal Connection Restaurant Program aimed at recognizing restaurants in the community that are making sustainable and eco-friendly changes to benefit our coastal community. Participating restaurants will earn "Sustainability Stars" that reflect their level of commitment to the environment through certain actions. Learn more at our

Everyday is Earth Day in Boca Raton as the City Collaborates and Cleans Its Coast
Coastal Resilience Partnership, 4ocean Clearing Waterways & the Great American Cleanup
The City of Boca Raton is a member of the Coastal Resilience Partnership, a group of 10 coastal municipalities partnered with Palm Beach County that hope to combat the effects of climate change with a focus on sea level rise. Boca Raton was one of the first cities to join this collaborative effort with other cities to assess the vulnerability of coastal communities due to climate change. Learn more about the

In an effort to clean up the City's waterways, the City Council has approved a contract with the Boca Raton-based company, 4ocean. The company will be clearing out litter in some Boca Raton waterways and canals. Watch coverage of this story at

Finally, it's important to keep our beaches clean. Join Gumbo Limbo Nature Center and millions across America for the nation's largest community service program, the
Great American Cleanup
on
April 27 from
8am to 11am at
Spanish River Park. Get involved by signing up for a beach or mangrove cleanup. This event is free of charge, for all ages (children under 18 must participate with an adult), and community service hours will be awarded. For more information and to register visit

Latest Updates on Lake Worth Drainage District Canal Rehabilitation Projects
Lake Worth Drainage District (LWDD) canal rehabilitation is set to resume in late May / early June with work on the L-42, L-47, L-41 & E-3 canals. Here are updates on the canals that affect Boca Raton residents:
L-47
- This area has been staked. Residents in this area have been sent notices from the Lake Worth Drainage District. Visit
LWDD.net for the map and notification letter related to L-47.
L-41 & E-3 - Residents have been notified by LWDD, City staff will do field work to assess once the area is staked.
L-42
- Working with Broken Sound to implement a vegetative plan for the area. Notices will likely go out later in the summer.

A new Spring event for the whole family with a focus on sustainability
The City of Boca Raton invites you and your family to the first annual
SpringFest, a FREE City event on April 6 from 10am to 3pm at Spanish River Park (3001 N State Road).
SpringFest will feature an
artisan market with plants, flowers, locally made products and handmade crafts, as well as
educational booths to promote sustainability in conjunction with Earth Month. There will be plenty of fun games and activities such as an egg hunt, petting zoo, arts and crafts, good food and live entertainment.

- I-95 Express Lanes - At Palmetto Park Road and I-95, northbound turn & ramp lanes have been reopened & are back to original status. Work at the intersections of I-95 / Camino Real and Palmetto Park Road are ongoing. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for updates.
- FPL continues with pole replacement projects around the City. Currently, work is being done at NW 13th Street and NW 15 Avenue.
- Camino Real Intracoastal Bridge remains scheduled for completion on June 30, 2019.
- Pavement resurfacing to begin at the end of April:
- NW 2nd Avenue from Palmetto Park Road to Glades Road
- Palmetto Park Road from Crawford Boulevard to west of FEC tracks

More art is coming to Boca Raton!
The Boca Raton Art in Public Places Advisory Board has chosen the artists for the
Spanish River Park / Beach Tunnel art mural.
Painting of the tunnel entrances is set to begin in April and run through May. Access to certain tunnels may be unavailable during this time (please pardon our dust while we make Boca Raton more beautiful).

Raising the Roof!
City of Boca Raton Building Department makes the single family home re-roof permit process easier
Replacing your home's roof is a big job, and a costly one. By the time you're ready to replace your roof, you've probably fixed more than one leak and may have had to deal with secondary problems like mold, water damage or wood rot. The City of Boca Raton Building Department has recently streamlined the single family home re-roof permit process, so once you make the decision to replace your roof, it's easier for you or your contractor to get to work.
Over the counter re-roof permits now take about 15 minutes or less when you visit the Building Department (200 NW 2nd Avenue) with the following documents:

More than 5,000 people attended Touch a Truck at the Spanish River Library! Families got to see, touch, climb aboard and learn about the City of Boca Raton's many fascinating trucks and vehicles from Recreation Services, Police Services, Municipal Services, Fire Rescue Services and Utility Services. Visitors also enjoyed special story times in the library. Hope to see you next year!
