Dear Mile High City –
Recent news headlines about election administration around the country have raised many understandable questions from the public. I want to take a moment to speak to you directly and address those concerns.
The U.S. Constitution is crystal clear that the administration of elections is delegated to the states. Section I, Article 4 explicitly states that election officials at the local level have the authority to carry out elections – no political figures, federal agencies, or outside actors may have any role in determining the outcome of an election. Period. Federal law also prohibits federal troops or agents from interfering with the elections process or the intimidation of voters.
I will fight like hell to make sure the law is enforced.
The framework is not new, nor is it optional. It is the untouchable bedrock of our democracy. Our office operates squarely within that structure, following the letter of the law, to run safe, accurate and secure elections.
Our work is transparent, and every step of the process is documented and open to public observation. Our voter rolls are updated every day live in a statewide system. All votes produce paper ballots. Those ballots are tracked, verified though processes and equipment are audited, and every single step of ballot processing is handled by bipartisan teams. Those steps ensure accountability and guard against any outside influence from any direction. It is precisely why any attempt to intimidate, politicize, centralize, or modify any part of the election process will fail.
We will continue to do what we have always done – run secure, accurate, and accessible elections while following the law and documenting our work every step of the way.
It has been increasingly difficult to be and elections official now days, but it’s also the best time to do so. History will remember, where we were and what we did when our democracy was under attack. It starts with your VOTE.

Clerk López Announces DCR's Support For Proposed Law Enforcement Mask Ban | |
Denver Clerk & Recorder Paul López announced that our office will stand in support of Denver City Council's proposed ban on law enforcement officers wearing masks while conducting operations.
He issued the following statement: "Federal law prohibits military or federal agents from interfering in elections and engaging in voter intimidation. However, with the Trump administration’s flagrant disregard for the US constitution and the law, and the recent threats to interfere with free and fair elections, we have no choice but to employ every tool we have to uphold public safety and protect voters from interference and intimidation at the polls.
The chaos, lawlessness, and terror inflicted up upon Americans in recent months is a direct result of agents refusing to ID themselves to avoid transparency and accountability.
It is my responsibility as Denver’s chief elections official to ensure that our elections are accessible and secure, and I will not tolerate attempts to interfere with or intimidate voters; and will enforce the full power of the constitution and the law.
I wholeheartedly stand with the Denver City Council and urge the final passage of Council Bill 26-0125 to uphold public safety and maintain the decades of trust in law enforcement so many in uniform have worked to establish."
