WELCOME
Welcome to the Appleton West Alumni Association e-newsletter.

This e-newsletter will be produced quarterly.

Appleton West High School and Appleton Education Foundation (AEF) have partnered to create this Alumni Association.

The Alumni Association's goal is to better communicate and strengthen and build relationships with West alumni.

AEF will continue to expand the alumni section of its website. Visit West's alumni page today.

More about the Foundation.
The Appleton Education Foundation was founded in 1997 to creatively enhance education in our community. Since then, AEF has granted more than $3.7 million.

FALL GRANTS AWARDED
WEST RECEIVES $2,289 IN GRANTS FROM AEF
In November, AEF funded 32 grant requests totaling over $24,000. West High School received two grants:

First year teacher Jane Allinger received $840 from the Betsy Melzer Endowment Fund and the Connie Pitt Memorial Endowment Fund (both funds within the AEF) for a special table and Unique Learning System curriculum to enhance her work with special education students.

Thanks to a grant written by Kathy Vanderloop, biology and genetics students will have access to a 3D printer. Students will learn how to program the 3D printer to print out replicas of proteins and other genetic material, thereby increasing their understanding of complex subject matter. $1,449 from AEF's unrestricted endowment will support this initiative. In addition, the West Endowment Fund (housed within AEF) will match that amount for a total of $2,898 to support this creative application of technology.

The next opportunity for AASD staff to apply for grants is April 11.

Interested in supporting granting at Appleton West or throughout AASD? Contact the AEF office to learn how.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL: GREG HARTJES
Graduation Day: A new generation of West alumni
Graduation day can often be a bittersweet day for parents. They are excited about this important milestone in their child's life, but also saddened by the realization that their son or daughter has become an adult.

This year will mark my 10th commencement ceremony as principal and 24th as a staff member, but this year's celebration will be extra special for me as my daughter Madelyn will be graduating from our great high school.

Madelyn has literally grown up at Appleton West, having attended countless sporting events, homecoming parades, and band concerts before she could even walk. Through elementary and middle school she often attended events for no other reason than to be with me. However, once she started high school she ignored me until her senior year... now she thinks I am okay again.

My hope for Madelyn is the same as my hope for all of our graduates: I hope her years at Appleton West have prepared her well for whatever the future brings her way, and I hope that when Madelyn looks back on her four years of high school it is with great fondness.

What I do know for certain is that on June 3, 2016, Madelyn will join all of you as a proud alumna of Appleton West High School.
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Introducing Arnie Fielkow, Class of 1974

Bio: Graduated from Appleton West in 1974; earned B.A. from Northwestern University and law degree from University of Wisconsin. His career started as a practicing attorney in Chicago where he was named the Commissioner/Compliance Officer of

what is now known as the Horizon League (UW-GB and UW-M are members). Most of his career has been in sports management (MLB, NFL,Continental Basketball Association) aside fro m six years as an elected official of the New Orleans City Council. He and his wife, Dr. Susan Fielkow, have three sons (Justin, Michael and Steven) and two daughters (Yana and Svetlana).

Current occupation: President & CEO, National Basketball Retired Players Association

Professional Accolades: 2014 - inducted into the Appleton West Hall of Fame; 2009 - named "New Orleanian of the Year;" 2007-2011 - citizens voted him "Best New Orleans City Concilmember;" 2007 - New Orleans Anti-Defamation League's A.I. Botnick Torch of Liberty Award; and many others

Favorite high school class: Civics and geography. I always had an interest in traveling, both in the U.S. and internationally. And, as it turns out, the government, politics and civics classes ultimately became part of my future. (His six years serving as an elected official in New Orleans immediately followed Hurricane Katrina.)

Teacher/Coach who made the biggest impact: Dick Emanuel, head basketball coach and assistant principal, was a mentor to me. I always had great respect and admiration for him. He was a legend at West. So many players in the basketball system got their foundation in life through his teaching and coaching.

Favorite thing about Appleton: Appleton is always going to be home for me. It brings back such fond memories. West was always known for outstanding academics and athletics. My most fond memories range from playing basketball, the state tournament for tennis, and having my first girlfriend.

Returning to Appleton: I still have some family in Appleton. We try to get back once or twice a year. We still have Packers season tickets so we usually make it back during football season. Last year we had a class reunion. I like to stay as connected as possible. The city is just such a special place; it will always be part of me.

Giving Back: It is important to give back to your school. Appleton West laid the foundation for me and so many of my cousins and other family members. Last year our family endowed a scholarship for a West student pursuing a degree in sports business/management.
