Governor Northam Announces Virginia’s Offshore Wind Project Among the First in the Nation to Use New Federal Permitting Initiative
Governor Ralph Northam announced that the Commonwealth of Virginia Offshore Wind project will be among the first in the nation to use a new federal permitting process designed to accelerate offshore wind development in the United States.
Governors of Nine East Coast States Send Offshore Wind Letter to Biden Administration
In a letter dated June 4, 2021, the governors of Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Virginia commended the Biden administration for its recently announced commitment to developing wind energy off the US coast.
BOEM and USACE Collaborate to Meet Offshore Wind Goals
In order to increase renewable energy production in offshore waters and help the Administration meet its commitment to deploy 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and the US Army Corps of Engineers have entered into an agreement in support of planning and reviewing renewable energy projects on the Outer Continental Shelf.
North Carolina Sets 8GW Offshore Goal for 2040
North Carolina has set out a goal of 2800MW of offshore wind by 2030 and 8000MW by 2040. Governor Roy Cooper issued an executive order highlighting North Carolina’s commitment to offshore wind power as the state transitions to a clean energy economy.
Biden-Harris Administration Proposes Competitive Lease Sale for Offshore Wind Development for New York and New Jersey
In support of the Biden-Harris administration’s goal of installing 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030, the Department of the Interior today announced a proposed sale for offshore wind development on the Outer Continental Shelf in the New York Bight. This would be the first competitive offshore wind lease sale for the Biden-Harris administration.
US Offshore Wind’s First Movers’ Lessons for Future Development
The nascent US offshore wind industry can learn from “first movers” that have already had wind farms permitted or have commissioned pilot projects, according to speakers at the digital Clean Power 2021.
