CultureLink News

August 2023

With the majority of Canadian weather being brisk, Canadians have learned how to make the most of all there is to do around the city and in nature during the summer months. In time, newcomers will learn to do the same. We at CultureLink aim to provide access and guidance through some of the experiences that help make Canada feel like home.

Moving around Toronto

Ready-Set-Ride

The summer started with our Bike Host program in full throttle. There are 55 participants and 12 mentors who, aside from their mentor-mentee rides, have participated in: two orientation rides to High Park, one group ride at Toronto Waterfront, one group trip to Niagara Falls and one group trip to Toronto Island. Together they have covered approximately 65 km by bike, and the program continues into the fall!

The Wheels on the Bus

While some go by bike, others take the bus. All year long, but specially during the summer, our programs organize family-friendly excursions around the city, in an effort to show our newcomers clients their new home. Guided walks, visits to parks and free-admission to museums are only part of the list of activities that new Canadians enjoyed.

Rain or Shine

This summer showed us just how unpredictable the weather can be. That is an important -yet underestimated- lesson for newcomers living in Toronto. Learning what activities are safe to do in different climates, and how to dress appropriately for each, allows them to enjoy the outdoors in any season. Layer up and enjoy the city!

Something for Everyone

Adults, youth and families discovered new places, practiced their creativity or developed artistic skills and enjoyed arts, culture and nature from around the world. We will continue to offer opportunities for newcomers to spend time outside, meet other people and discover all the things that Toronto has to offer.

Indoors and Online

Learning together

Meanwhile, indoor activities include our senior groups, gathering on a regular basis for sessions that include a healthy meal, exercises, arts and crafts, information and celebrations. This sessions help break their isolation while covering a variety of topics, from Canada's history to Diabetes prevention.

The role we play

In a heart-felt testimonial, one of our Cybersecurity Training Program's participants tells us just how important this program was for her and her family, and the pivotal role it played in their settlement journey.

In the Spotlight

CultureLink's Children and Youth Centre is the centre of operations for most of our programs for young new Canadians. A few minutes away from the Main Office, this location opened its doors in 2016 and has since increased the number and type of services offered. To match the new energy in the building, they have updated their look on Instagram. Follow @clink_youth to meet the team that makes things happen and stay on the loop for upcoming events!
