THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF TAXATION
ISSUED A WARNING TO OHIOANS WHO MAY BE VICTIMS OF UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUD
to report the suspected fraud or potentially face higher taxes!

More than 80,000 cases of unemployment fraud have been identified by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS). Criminals are using stolen identities to file for unemployment benefits.

Victims who did not file for benefits, but have received Form 1099-G from ODJFS indicating that unemployment benefits have been received, could potentially pay both federal and state tax on that unreceived benefit if they do not take action.

Unemployment benefits are taxable and the IRS is notified directly when someone receives benefits. If you have received an unwarranted 1099-G, contact ODJFS to report the fraud and request a corrected 1099-G. ODJFS will then contact the IRS directly to correct the record and the victim will not incur a tax liability.

The IRS is advising fraud victims that they do not need to have a response from the ODJFS on their ID theft claim or a corrected 1099-G to file their federal and state income tax returns. It is however important to file the claim to avoid a future tax bill from the IRS or ODT.
To report unemployment fraud, please contact ODJFS at 833.658.0394 or https://unemploymenthelp.ohio.gov/ and click on the red 'Report Identity Theft' button.
