The Ohio Water Resources Center Newsletter

Issue 4 | Volume 6 | April 2024

From Our Directors

As the federally authorized and state-designated Water Resources Research Institute for the state of Ohio, we undergo periodic evaluations to assess our use of the federal grant and matching funds in meeting the mandates of the Water Resources Research Act.

Based on the activities of the Ohio WRC during Fiscal Years 2016 through 2020, the Ohio WRC was evaluated to be performing at an outstanding level! Of the 54 institutes, the Ohio WRC is one of six that were designated as outstanding!

We have excellent researchers we fund that are critical to us achieving this designation. Particularly, our researchers fund students on projects that result in publications and theses/dissertations. Moreover, the funded researchers have leveraged the funding to obtain follow-on funding from numerous grants. We work to create education and outreach activities and materials, often including this funded research. These events span a diverse set of audiences as the Ohio WRC continues to maintain relationships and connections. The Ohio WRC strives to continue the outstanding work that is being performed. Thank you to our funded researchers!

Ohio becomes the first Midwest state to join The WateReuse Association

Water reuse is the reclamation, treating, and reusing of water from a variety of sources for beneficial purposes. Water reuse can be beneficial to existing water supplies and it enhances water security, sustainability, and resilience.

The WateReuse Association is the nation's only trade association dedicated to advancing laws, policy, funding, and public acceptance of recycled water. In an effort to advance the use of water reuse, the state of Ohio has joined the WateReuse Association making it the first Midwest state to do so. State sections of the WateReuse Association aim to address local issues, advocate for legislation, and organize conferences and workshops. WateReuse Ohio will serve a resource for collaboration between utilities, businesses, consultants, and academics to share lessons, best management practices, and new technologies.

It is essential to collaborate and create partnerships as a means of stepping forward in this pressing issue of water reuse and protecting our water resources. The Ohio WRC is excited to become a member of The WateReuse Association and participate as Ohio begins its journey.

USGS Science Highlight

National Water Availability Assessments

National Water Availability Assessments are one of three products of the Integrated Water Availability Assessments produced by the USGS Water Resources Mission Area. The goal of the National Water Availability Assessments is to use the information from the National Modeled Water Atlas and other projects from the Water Resources Mission Area and Water Science Centers to provide a summary and interpretation of water quantity, quality, and use at a national level.

The National Water Availability Assessments are modeled partly by the previous national assessments performed by the Water Resources Council in the 1960s and 1970s. Additionally, the assessments will build on the national water use and water quality data from the WMA's Water Availability and Use Program and the former National Water Quality Assessment program. The outcomes of the National Water Availability Assessments will include model predictions, evaluations of water quantity, quality, and use, and make forecasts.

The National Water Availability Assessments will be produced on a five-year cycle due to the large scope. Doing so will allow for the generation, analysis, and publication of new information. Other outcomes of the assessments such as data visualization, short topical summaries, and journal articles will be published in the years between the national assessments.
