The Ohio Water Resources Center Newsletter

Issue 3 | Volume 6 | March 2024

From Our Directors

Ohio Water Resources Center (Ohio WRC) co-directors, Linda Weavers and John Lenhart, and graduate assistant, Haleigh Fernandez, attended the 2023 Annual National Institutes for Water Resources (NIWR) meeting in Washington D.C. in February. The annual meeting provides an opportunity for all 54 Water Resource Research Institutes (WWRIs) to meet and discuss experiences and challenges in advancing the goals of NIWR and the Water Resources Research Act program.

Linda, Haleigh, and John dedicated one day on Capitol Hill to discuss with Ohio's representatives the importance of the work at the Ohio WRC as well as at all 54 WWRIs. They met with staffers from Senators JD Vance and Sherrod Brown and Representatives Warren Davidson, Joyce Beatty, and Greg Landsman. These meetings with representatives are essential to communicate how researchers being funded by the Ohio WRC are meeting the needs of Ohio and to highlight the importance of the work conducted by the WRRIs.

Research Spotlight

The use of shotgun metagenomics to longitudinally track stream resistome dynamics: from headwaters to wastewaters

Dr. Jonathan Van Gray, an assistant professor at the Ohio State University, completed an Ohio Water Resources Center funded project via a 104B subaward. Resistance to antibiotics is an emerging concern due to the overuse of antibiotics. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), bacteria (ARBs), and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) are known as the resistome. The spread of the resistome is attributed to wastewater treatment plant effluent or livestock waste entering surface waters. Although WWTPs and livestock waste have been identified as point-sources of the resistome, the path upstream of the point sources remains unclear. The goal of Dr. Van Gray's project was to compare resistome and bacterial community succession from stream headwaters to the first mixing with WWTP effluent to identify patterns of resistome development relating to land use, water chemistry, bacterial community composition, and downstream dispersal.

Dr. Van Gray and his team collected sediment and water from watersheds in northeastern Ohio during fall 2022 and summer 2023. Water samples were analyzed to identify nutrient profiles of each stream and sediments were used for DNA extraction and metagenomic analysis.

Results show a correlation between resistome elements and both land use and nitrate concentrations. These community composition shifts are indicative of a biogeographic signature of each system. However, similarities in resistome structure suggest baseline resistance among headwater sites. These results provide important insights of resistome and bacterial communities from headwater streams to point-sources.

Regional Water Availability Assessments

Regional Water Availability Assessments are one of three products of the Integrated Water Availability Assessments produced by the USGS Water Resources Mission Area. The goal of the Regional Water Availability Assessments are to complete assessments of water availability in different regions throughout the United States. By breaking the assessments up into different representative regions, a more detailed analysis of the water availability will be obtained than possible at a national level assessment. The results of the Regional Water Availability assessments will provide insight on national patterns. Additionally, national models, a second product of the Integrated Water Availability Assessments, called the National Modeled Water Atlas, will be improved by the regional assessments as well as addressing the needs of local stakeholders.

The Regional Water Availability Assessments are conducted in watersheds that are representative of larger regions and will investigate the major drivers of water availability in different conditions. Many of the same questions as the National Water Availability Assessments, the third product of the Integrated Water Availability Assessments, will be investigated in the Regional Water Availability Assessments but the investigations will be heavily focused on regional water issues. A fact sheet has been prepared by the USGS to further explain the Integrated Water Availability Assessments.
