From Our Directors

A train derailment in East Palestine occurred on February 3rd, 2023, resulting in the evacuation of the town. Several of the train cars contained hazardous materials, including vinyl chloride. A controlled burn of the chemicals was conducted to prevent an explosion. Vinyl chloride is a colorless gas used to make plastic with exposure risks associated with liver, brain and lung cancers, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Multiple agencies are working together to help support the residents of East Palestine, including the US and Ohio Environmental Protection Agencies (EPA), Ohio Management Agency, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the Department of Transportation (DOT), and the National Transportation Safety Board. Water quality continues to be monitored throughout the state and most recent reports can be found here.

Previous studies can be of value when analyzing the potential risks of catastrophic events to down-stream water quality. In 2019, Dr. Patrick Ray, Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Cincinnati, completed a Ohio Water Resources funded project via a USGS 104(b) subaward. This project titled "Multidimensional risk assessment on riverine contamination: case study of Cincinnati, OH" aimed to better understand the consequences of water supply interruptions caused by the contamination of river water. The developed framework, a river contamination risk (RANK) model, can be used for informed risk assessment.

Spotlight

2022 Annual National Institutes for Water Resources (NIWR) Meeting and 104G RFP webinar

The Annual NIWR Meeting was an opportunity for all 54 Water Resource Research Institutes (WRRIs) to get together to discuss challenges and opportunities, meet with state representatives on Capitol Hill, and work together to advance the vision and mission of NIWR. This meeting allows the Institutes to collaborate to ensure they continue to address the nation's most pressing water resources issues through research, shared information and technology, and developing a diverse workforce. Ohio WRC Co-Directors Linda Weavers (center), John Lenhart (right), and Graduate Administrative Assistant Haley Kuhn (left) visited Capitol Hill and met with staffers for Senators Sherrod Brown and JD Vance, as well as, Representatives Joyce Beatty, Mike Carey, and Troy Balderson, to discuss Ohio WRC research and the impact of Ohio WRC activities to Ohio's water stakeholders.

In addition, the WRRIs will be hosting a webinar on March 9th, 2023 at 2 pm Eastern time that focuses on the National Competitive Grants Request for Proposals (RFPs). The full proposal process and funding priorities will be discussed, and there will be the opportunity for researchers to ask questions. In addition, researchers will be able to identify potential collaborators in topic-specific breakouts. The goals of the National Competitive Grants programs include encouraging collaboration between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and university scientists in research on substantial national and water resources issues, promoting the distribution of research results from projects funded under the program and assisting in the training of scientists in water resources. Three distinct funding opportunities have been announced: National Competitive Grants (General), Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) and Per-and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS). Please note the April 27th deadline listed on the RFPs is for institutes, such as the Ohio Water Resources Center (Ohio WRC), to apply. For Ohio investigators, project proposals must be submitted via email to the Ohio WRC ([email protected]) by April 17th, 2023 at 5 p.m. To allow us to plan, researchers interested in applying are encouraged to reach out to the Ohio WRC as soon as possible.

USGS Science Highlight

Collaborative Science Provides Understanding of Contaminants in Bottled Water

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) researchers collaborated with public health experts to complete a series of studies investigating human exposure to contaminants in the most common drinking water supply chains in the United States: public tap water, private tap water, and bottled water. While human exposure to contaminants through tap water has been reported, comparable data on human exposure to contaminants through bottled water was not available.

The USGS, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and National Institute of Environmental Health Science completed a study where 30 different bottled waters were assessed for 53 inorganics, 465 organics, and 14 microbial contaminant mixtures. The potential human health effects were assessed by comparing the measured concentrations to FDA's standards of quality (SOQ) levels and to EPA's maximum contaminant level goals (MCLGs). Regulated and unregulated chemicals (inorganic, organic) were detected in bottled water samples, as seen in the results of previous studies of public-supply and private-well tap water by this group as well. None of the bottled water samples exceeded SOQs; however, MCLGs of zero were exceeded for several inorganic contaminants including arsenic, lead, uranium, and disinfection byproducts.

Overall, these results demonstrate that supply chains for drinking water face similar challenges of contaminants that occur in watersheds and aquifers used for drinking water sources, contaminants that are generated during disinfection processes and distribution, and contaminants at the point of use.
