As one of 54 Water Resources Research Institutes nationwide federally authorized by the Water Resources Research Act, the Ohio Water Resources Center (WRC) has funded over 75 water research projects over the past decade. This research helps resolve state and regional water problems, promotes technology transfer and application of research, and trains scientists through participation in research. With the assistance of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Ohio Water Development Authority (OWDA), we are excited to announce the funding of four new projects starting September 2022 and two projects that started this spring!
-
Modeling Total Microcystin Concentrations In Grand Lake St Marys During A Period Of Exceedingly Low External Runoff; Drs. Newell, Jacquemin, and Doll; Wright State University
-
Quantifying Induced Infiltration By Municipal Production Wells Using Stable Isotopes Of Water; Drs. Levy, Rech and Ms. Ngoma; Miami University
-
Evaluating Current and Future Drinking Water Affordability in Ohio; Dr. Gingerich and Dr. Bielicki; Ohio State University

And Water for All. A documentary on water access and affordability in Ohio |
Dr. Ramiro Berardo, Associate Professor, and Dr. Joseph Campbell, Lecturer, in the School of Environment and Natural Resources at Ohio State University completed an Ohio Water Resources Center funded project via the Ohio Water Resources Center’s “Time Critical” Research Request for Proposals. The film titled “And Water for All” aimed to educate a broad audience about the challenges of building and maintaining the costly infrastructure needed to deliver clean water to all Ohioans, analyze the causes of the affordability crisis in rural and urban settings and facilitate a nuanced, non-partisan discussion about viable ways to address the Ohio water affordability crisis in future decades.
Across the nation, rates charged for drinking water, sewer management and stormwater services continue to increase, placing a heavy burden on families and communities who lack the financial capacity to face these costs. In Ohio, affording water and sewer bills continues to be a pressing issue. Drs. Berardo and Campbell created a 55-minute educational documentary to discuss these challenges by highlighting the views of a wide range of stakeholders, including urban and rural residents of the state, policymakers from the two major political parties, members of environmental NGOs, public utilities representatives and academics.
The documentary debuted on March 22, 2022 (World Water Day) at Ohio State’s Environmental Professionals Network breakfast program. The film is currently available for free on YouTube and will be used in multiple undergraduate and graduate classes at Ohio State University.

Now Available: USGS makes it easier to create hydrography features from 3D elevation data |
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has released updates to the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) that will allow users to more easily create hydrography information from elevation data. The NHD is the most comprehensive dataset for the nation, representing the water drainage network of the United States with features such as rivers, streams, canals, lakes, ponds, coastline, dams, and stream gages. These improvements come from new specifications in 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) products that allow for consistent analysis of data, making it easier to align hydrography features to elevation surfaces. This enhancement in hydrography data provided by the USGS will be a valuable resource for water quality management, planning, and conservation. This data will allow (a) scientists to more fully model the hydrologic cycle, (b) engineers to make better development decisions, (c) water suppliers to improve water quality and availability, (d) disaster response planners to mitigate natural disasters, and (e) natural resource managers to better protect the environment.
The USGS is continuing to revise the requirements for the capture of hydrographic features from 3DEP products and has created a new webpage to share updates with users. More information on the 3D Hydrography Program initiative can be found here.
