Historic mansion soon to be on the market

Abilene's humblest beginnings in a dugout and the height of its Victorian elegance both live at one address.

The Lebold Mansion, 108 N. Vine, was declared the "finest dwelling house west of Topeka" by an 1883 history of Kansas.

The dugout of the first settler in the area, Timothy Hersey, is still in the basement of the mansion.

Throwback Thursday

On this day in 1919, the Transcontinental Motor Convoy arrived in San Francisco.

In the summer of 1919, a young Lieutenant Colonel named Dwight D. Eisenhower participated in the first Army transcontinental motor convoy. The expedition consisted of 81 motorized Army vehicles that crossed the United States from Washington, DC, to San Francisco, a venture covering a distance of 3,251 miles in 62 days. The expedition was manned by 24 officers and 258 enlisted men. The convoy was to test the mobility of the military during wartime conditions. As an observer for the War Department, Lt. Col. Eisenhower learned first-hand of the difficulties faced in traveling great distances on roads that were impassable and resulted in frequent breakdowns of the military vehicles. These early experiences influenced his later decisions concerning the building of the interstate highway system during his presidential administration.

5 Star Reviews - Engle House Bed and Breakfast

Breakfast was great and it provided a good start to the day. Our room was spacious and comfortable.

Chris and her husband did a terrific job renovating the house. The details in the old structure were intricate and well-restored. It was clear that the house was lovingly restored and maintained.

Chris and her husband know the area well, so take advantage of their knowledgeable and ask them questions about restaurants, sites, and about Abilene.

We truly loved our stay and would definitely return!!!

Runners: skip the busy route 15 and just go a block to Cedar St. Turn left on it and you will avoid the busy roads except for a block or two. It's a long and flat street.
