Old Fort Gateway Trail System

Official Opening and Trail Report

On Sunday, June 26 six miles of new trails were officially opened at a ribbon cutting at the trailhead for the Old Fort Gateway Trail System.

Congratulations

to the G5 Trail Collective, the US Forest Service, and the Catawba Vale Collaborative for getting the first phase of a 42-mile network of trails in the Grandfather District of the Pisgah National Forest near Old Fort.

The Gateway Trails, seen on the map below, are rated easy to moderate and with Jarrett Creek Road can be used in a variety of loops and configurations for a hike or ride as short or long as individuals like.

The trails are multi-use, designated for hiking, cycling, and/or equestrian. There is a large trailhead parking area with restrooms just off Curtis Creek Road about 1.5 miles from the US 70 intersection. Accessibility is one of the key features of the Old Fort Gateway Trail System. See below for more information and pictures of the trails.

For more information about the Old Fort Gateway Trail System visit the G5 Collective website.

The best way to learn about the trails is to get out on them!  The kiosk at the trailhead has a large map, information, and rules of the trails.

The pictures below are a sampling of the trails taken on the morning of June 30.  I met several hikers and cyclists on the trails. Sight lines are generally good even with some of the tight switchbacks. Cyclists were courteous and the trails are wide enough to accommodate hikers and cyclists.
