Guests can follow the construction of a dress in a single weekend – from cutting out the pattern to hooking it up for the first time. Demonstrations will give a deep dive into dying and re-dying wool; fabrics, trim and sewing supplies; production of shoes and straw hats; and more. Special programs will take place each day (subject to change), including:
- Strawbraiding: A Glimpse into the Collection – 10:00 a.m. & 1:00 p.m. (Saturday only)
-
Textile Exhibit Tour: Needle & Thread – 11:00 a.m.
- Clothing for the Family from the OSV Museum Collection – 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Old Sturbridge Village’s new exhibit, Needle & Thread: The Art and Skill of Clothing an Early 19th Century Family will open during Textile Weekend, on Aug. 13. Curated by Collections Manager and Curator of Textiles, Rebecca Beall, the exhibit will highlight the responsibilities held by rural New England housewives in constructing new garments, patching, mending, and darning worn items, and repurposing old items into new wardrobes – ensuring that their families were clothed in good order for many occasions. It will feature over a dozen garments and accessories, along with other textile and clothing objects from the Old Sturbridge Village Museum Collections. Clothing featured in the exhibit will change periodically for the different seasons, showcasing more of the collection and helping to preserve those items on display.
“Clothing a family was an enormous task in the early 19th-century and we want our visitors to gain a better understanding of how these techniques relate to their own clothing today,” says Derek Heidemann, Director of Collections and Research at Old Sturbridge Village. “This exhibit will delve into the complex story of where materials came from, fashion and practical clothing advice, and the emergence of the readymade clothing industry. We know that visitors interested in the history of clothing will be particularly interested in the exhibit because it focuses on the everyday garments that were impacted by both fashion and function, however, clothing is such a universal topic that we think guests of all ages will enjoy the spectrum of clothing that is on display.”
In August, up to three kids ages 17 and younger are admitted FREE into Old Sturbridge Village when accompanied by an adult paying full admission ($28). For more details on the event or to purchase tickets, visit: https://www.osv.org/event/textile-weekend-2022/.
