Muster Day is a day of military celebration, muskets, martial music, and more. In the early 19th-century, farmers and craftsmen were required by law to serve in local militia units – the forerunner of today’s National Guard. Often, the various militia companies of several towns would come together for a regimental muster, a grand display that brought the townspeople out to cheer on the companies as they marched by in dashing uniforms.
On Muster Day at Old Sturbridge Village, visitors are welcome to view and take part in the spectacle firsthand. Watch as the militia demonstrate the use of cannons and muskets and participate in target practice. Children can join the company, marching with the militia, following officer instructions and learning early 19th-century drills. The day will also feature a special treat of fresh gingerbread available for purchase outside of the Minor Grant Store – a delight that was frequently enjoyed during the 19th-century occasion.
At Evening at the Village, guests are invited to pack a picnic and stretch out on the OSV lawn to enjoy live music with Atwater-Donnelly, an American and Celtic folk musician who performs original songs and poetry. A nature walk will take place during the event, where guests can explore the woods around the Village and learn about its history with a naturalist guide. The Village grounds will also be open for guests to explore by foot, along with horse-drawn carriage rides and snacks and drinks available for sale.
Muster Day is included with standard daytime admission or membership to Old Sturbridge Village. Evening at the Village tickets are sold separately, with rates for the nighttime event at $15 for non-member adults and $10 for members, or $10 for non-member youth and $7 for member youth.
