2015 Maison la Berthaude Chateauneuf du Pape Vielles Vignes Rouge

55% Grenache 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 5% Field Blend

The 2015 Barthaude CDP Vielles Vignes (old Vines) is another wine which has just arrived from the Craig
Baker Import Portfolio.  We originally tasted this wine last Friday with Craig and a few friends. Frankly, "WE" is incorrect, I remember opening it, but when I went back to taste the Chateauneuf there was no more. Michele and those who joined us, drained the bottle with a plate of sirloin and duck mousse cracker apps quicker than I could come back to the table with my glass and some sliced cheese. Oh well, I had another bottle and opened It yesterday to take notes while working through some boring paper work. I pretty much drained the bottle and regardless of rumor it is rare for me to drain a bottle of young Chateauneuf on my own. I see why it went so fast on Friday. This is an exceptionally structured, juicy Chateauneuf du Pape with great spice, minerality and black pepper. This Barthaude keeps calling you back for more, with or without a variety of munchies.

We are able to offer the 2015 Maison Barthaude at $43.50 per bottle; 5% off 6, 10% off 12   That is way below the average for old vine CDP.  Rex

About the wine;

There are a few items of specific note and pedigree which should be mentioned when accessing this Chateauneuf du Pape;
  1. The minimum vine age associated with the components of this CDP is 60 years, but some are well over 100 years.
  2. 2015 is considered by the top producers in the southern Rhone " a power vintage" " bright, ripe, fresh wines".
  3. The most complex Chateauneuf du Pape tend to display the blending of many of the 13 grapes verities grown in the southern Rhone. 5 % of this wine is a field blend with untyped vines ( including Viognier which go back well over 100 years ) these vineyard have been family owned and maintained for 5 generations.
The 2015 Barthaude Chateauneuf du Pape Vielles Vignes is big and juicy with blackberry dark plums and classic black pepper. The nose is spicy, filled with dark berry, lavender and violets.  This wine is multi layered and rich dark raspberry is endless in a finish I would call succulent.  The various varieties used as components supply endless, everchanging spice flavors.   This CDP will drink for at least 12 years.

5 cases available, $43.50, 5% off 6; 10% off 12

All of the very best,
Rex and Michele
