Old Woodward Reconstruction Project Update - 5/3/18
Eastbound Maple Rd. Closure Advisory Update 5/3/18
The excavation work for the Old Woodward Reconstruction Project has resulted in the exposure of two aging and brittle water mains at the Old Woodward and Maple intersection. The frailty of these water mains has been further compounded by the flow of traffic on eastbound Maple during construction, sparking a number of leaks that resulted in the temporary closure of eastbound Maple traffic at Old Woodward.
In order to ensure a smooth and safe connection to the newly installed water main system, contractors have advised the City to keep eastbound Maple closed at the intersection of Old Woodward until approximately Friday, May 11th. By that time, we plan to have all buildings in the immediate area disconnected from the old water main system and reconnected to the new water main system, allowing for the old water mains to be abandoned.
The replacement of the tired, underground infrastructure is the most difficult phase of the Old Woodward Reconstruction Project particularly with the unexpected variables associated with underground construction work. The City appreciates your patience and understanding as it works to get through this phase of the project as fast as possible.
In order to avoid the temporary eastbound Maple closure, through traffic drivers can go south on Chester, go east on Brown and then north on Peabody to rejoin Maple eastbound. Maple Rd. east and west of the project limits will remain open for local traffic and on street parking only.
