Tazzarin North to Nunatsiavut

Old and New

2330, Friday, June 23, 2023

Today had a bit of the old and a bit of the new. Much of thebday was spent aboard Tazzarin: mounting the boom, boom vang, reefinghalyard, reeflines and other items. We did run into a bit of a problem with the jib roller furler; but, feel sure we can solve that tomorrow. A little electrical work adding some USB outlets for charging electronics, repairing some lighting wires that got cut when the engine was pulled for rebuild last year. The list goes on.

Today was very gusty and the sun spent the day as a glowing orange orb, a phenomenon caused by the ongoing Canadian wildfires. The other amazing thing in the sky today was an airshow along the coast by the Snowbirds of the Royal Canadian Air Force. The Snowbirds are Canada's version of the Blue Angles in the US.

So, the sun in a smokey sky with jets roaring by against the gray backdrop was the touch of "new" in our day. The touch of "old" was a lunch of fresh cod "fish and chips" from a food truck in the nearby fishing Outport of Quidi Vidi. The last touch of "old" was beside our lunch spot - a classic, old Newfoundland trap skiff with a "one lunger" single cylinder engine. A lovely boat that has been the mainstay of the inshore cod fishery here for generations. The boat is in the photo at the top of this email. Below is a photo of the Snowbirds flying in formation and the food truck with the best cod ever.
