Disparities by Sex and Race and Ethnicity in Death Rates Due to Opioid Overdose Among Adults 55 Years or Older, 1999 to 2019
Opioid overdose deaths have increased among US adults ages 55 and older, and disproportionately increased among older adult Non-Hispanic Black men compared to non-Hispanic White men in this age group. This longitudinal cross-sectional study points to racism and ageism as factors fueling the disparities and the need for more information about older adult populations, and screening, outreach, and treatment models tailored for older adults with SUD.
