Olive Free Library Certified Sustainable!

Olive Free Library located in West Shokan has been designated as a Certified Sustainable Library through the Sustainable Library Certification Program (SLCP)!

With this recognition, Olive Free Library becomes the thirty-sixth public library to earn Sustainable Library Certification through the SLCP: an award-winning benchmarking system and community of practice designed to provide public libraries, academic libraries, library systems, and school librarians with exclusive resources and guidelines to shift towards a cleaner, greener, and more equitable future.

“The Olive Free Library is incredibly proud to receive Sustainable Library Certification, which recognizes the commitment and efforts of our staff and Board and our shared dedication to building a more sustainable and resilient future,” said Melissa McHugh, Library Director. “This achievement is not simply about the practices we have put in place within the library—it reflects our responsibility to serve as a leader, partner, and resource for our community. We look forward to building on this accomplishment and finding new ways to make sustainability an integral part of how we serve our patrons and the community.”

They join Highland and the Kinderhook libraries in our system and over 70 libraries worldwide that have completed the certification.

Maintaining their commitment to sustainability moving forward, library staff plan to develop a pollinator garden for the library, continue the removal of invasive species, and further collaborate with the town and other local organizations for community events.

The program was co-hosted by the Kent Historical Society and made possible by the Putnam County Historian's Office Rev250 grant.

Resource Sharing & Sierra

The digital staff picks shelves have been updated for October with lots of spooky novels, some nonfiction, and quite a few movie recommendations. Congratulations to Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House for being the most popular suggestion with three different people naming it their favorite. Staff also doubled up on Daniel Kraus's The Autumnal, Elizabeth Kostova's The Historian, and Junji Ito's Uzumaki.

November call for recommendations – as we go into the holidays, the theme will be books or media about, featuring, or inspiring kindness and gratitude. Let us know your recommendations here and share the link with other staff.

All information and links are on the Staff Picks page of the Mid-Hudson website.
