Forget chocolate sprinkles and vanilla syrup, Starbucks now wants to tempt you with olive-oil infused coffee. The Oleato range of drinks, each containing Partanna extra virgin olive oil, launches in Italy on Wednesday and the US this spring before coming to the UK, Japan and Middle East later this year.
If this caught on at cafes across Australia …

Nearby farmers are among the most vocal opponents to the proposed Bowdens Silver Project. (ABC Central West: Mollie Gorman)
Hearings to decide the fate of a controversial silver, lead and zinc mine proposed for central west NSW have been told the project's progression has been like "watching a train crash in very slow motion". The Independent Planning Commission today concluded three days of public hearings at Mudgee as part of its review of the proposed Bowdens Silver Project at the nearby village of Lue.
The AOA backed the region’s olive growers at the hearings and presented compelling evidence on the dangers of lead in agricultural products. There’s more detail in the coming March edition of Olivegrower & Processor - if you’re not signed up already, you can subscribe here.

Guava-root knot nematode detected in Hervey Bay with farmers and gardeners on high alert
A highly invasive and destructive pest that attacks the roots of vegetables and can cause significant crop loss has been discovered in a Hervey Bay backyard. Last week, Biosecurity Queensland confirmed it had detected a microscopic, parasitic worm species known as guava root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne enterolobii) in southern Queensland.
Australia was the last continent to report the pest and now it’s here, vigilant monitoring and reporting is the only way to reduce the spread. Let’s hope we never run a news story like this on Xylella fastidiosa.

It's estimated that around half a billion poultry birds have fallen foul of H5N1 bird flu. (Getty Images: Khaled Desouki)
A mountain lion, bear and skunk are some of the latest victims of bird flu virus spreading around the world. The highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) known as H5N1 has scientists worried. Since 2021, the virus has gone gangbusters and made its way to every continent except Australia and Antarctica.
An important issue for anyone with poultry - even just as ‘pest control’ in the grove - to keep up with. And there’s more around biosecurity this week:

These bees are free from varroa mite, but new cases have been detected on the NSW Mid North Coast. (ABC Rural: Fiona Breen)
There have been new detections of the deadly varroa mite in beehives at two locations on the NSW Mid North Coast, linked to the illegal movement of beehives. The NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) said both detection sites, at Taree and nearby Wherrol Flat, were linked to known properties in current eradication zones in the Hunter region.
If you have hives on your property, please ensure you know they’re being correctly managed.

Last days to submit opposition to ‘Agrumato’ trademark application | |
|
In January 2022 IP Australia received an application by an Italian entity to trademark the word ‘Agrumato’ in Australia.
The AOA has been monitoring the application throughout the examination process and confirmed it has now been accepted. Significantly, however, the item listings for “edible oils and fats; extra virgin olive oil for food” have been removed from the Class 29 application category, with “olive pastes” now the only olive-related product listed.
Note: the application scope also includes an additional range of unrelated food items. You can view the trademark application here.
The application is now in the opposition period and the AOA is co-ordinating a collective submission on behalf of Australian producers. If you feel that this may impact your business, or that the trademarking of the term is inappropriate, please send details of your opposition to the AOA at secretariat@australianolives.com.au. Submissions are required by the end of February for collation by the opposition period deadline.
You can also lodge your own opposition - more information and links here.
