What We're Up To...August and September
|
|
|
|
- We finished out the summer with a bang! In August we hosted three summer field trips for students, as well as a Summer Day Camp.
- The Kitchenistas met for their monthly meeting and participated in a Kefir water class led by amazing volunteer Rosa.
- We completed our Project Impact program evaluation training and presented our findings to other organizations and community members at a showcase.
- We hosted our first two birthday parties for children, as well as an Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony and they were all great successes!
- Channel 8 joined us in the wee hours of the morning to talk about our Adult Cooking Classes and Gardening Classes. We hosted a Healthy Tapas Cooking Class on September 9th and will host a Gardening 101 workshop and Open House on September 24th.
- Our 8th generation of future Kitchenistas began our Cooking for Salud program. Chef Joe Pastry of Waters Fine Foods & Catering, Chef Marguerite Grifka of California's Table, Chef Matt Gordon of Urban Solace and Solace & the Moonlight Lounge, and Chef Miguel Valdez of The Red Door and Bar by Red Door have donated their time to teach these ladies how to make healthy, delicious recipes. Thank you chefs!!
- Olivewood participated in the National City Automotive Heritage Day, letting the community know about our programs. We also hosted an Open House, a volunteer group of MIT alumni, and a yoga class...all on the same day!
- Now that it's September, we have begun field trips with our partner schools Olivewood Elementary and Lincoln Acres Elementary. We also hosted a group from the San Ysidro Health Center's Salsita Program.
- We are welcoming on a slew of new interns, including both college and high school interns, who will be provided critical support for our programs.
- After successfully graduating the first round of students for the Urban Ag High School Internship Program in May, we couldn't wait to welcome the new group. They just started the 12-week program for the fall semester! Thank you Wells Fargo for sponsoring this new program.
- Olivewood will participate in the SD Provider Fair, SDAPI Culinary Fusion Festival, and the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Health & Wellness Fair.
