And just like that, the global situation has changed quickly with the newly discovered COVID-19 variant Omicron. With the threat of a more transmissible virus variant looming, some countries are canceling flights from affected countries, while others are imposing new quarantine restrictions on travelers arriving via specific routes. Japan has taken a tougher stance and, as of November 30, will close to all non-citizens, including international students and family members.
Governments are attempting to buy time while they assess the potential impact of Omicron. With most nations still trying to comprehend this “variant of concern,” students can only hang in there and hope that the global health situation does not deteriorate as governments do their best to mitigate the threat as soon as possible.

As U.S. Hunts for Spies, University Scientists Warn of Backlash
A Chinese American scientist finds a new passion-- promoting justice for Chinese and Asian Americans-- after going through strict surveillance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation that even cost him his professorial job at an American university. This feature shows the plight of Asian Americans, particularly Chinese, in academia who are suspected of espionage since the China Initiative started during the Trump Administration and has continued under President Joe Biden. Some experts believe that surveilling Chinese Americans in the academe may eventually hurt the scientific community by scaring away intellectuals who are of Chinese descent.

International Student Enrolment at Yukon University Bouncing Back From COVID-19
While COVID-19 has had a significant impact on post-secondary students and institutions across Canada, new research indicates that the pandemic has resulted in just a minor drop in international student enrollment across the country. This is especially true for international students seeking study permits in Yukon, as international student enrollment at Yukon University has now returned to pre-pandemic levels. Some experts believe that changes to post-graduate work permits announced by IRCC are largely why international student enrollment did not drop significantly during the pandemic.

Overseas Education: Students in Pursuit of ‘Culture’ Over ‘Career’
According to a Western Union commissioned research from Nielsen Inc., 45 percent of Indian students surveyed regard personal development as the most significant driver triggering their decision to study overseas. This was followed by ‘cultural exploration’ and ‘international exposure’ as drivers of their decision-making process. In terms of country of choice, while Indian students have typically opted to study in the US, the UK, Canada, and Australia, they are also choosing newer alternatives such as Germany, Italy, Ireland, Turkey, Russia, and China.

Japan banned new entries by foreigners globally for at least one month in an attempt to stave off the new Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus.
