The first-of-the-year 2022 issue begins with the New York Times State of the Virus from Dec. 30, which focuses on the impact of Omicron:
- The United States is averaging more than 300,000 new cases a day for the first time in the pandemic. Hospitalizations are growing at a much slower rate than cases.

Urban areas in the Northeast are seeing explosive case growth. In Washington, D.C., reports of new infections are up about 800 percent over the last two weeks. In New York City, new cases have increased 600 percent.

The Colorado counties that include the ski resort towns of Aspen and Breckenridge have the country’s highest rates of recent cases. Both those counties have high vaccination rates.

In Ohio, where cases have surpassed previous highs, the governor sent more National Guard troops to assist with hospital staffing. Coronavirus hospitalizations in Ohio are near record levels.
- Breakthrough infections are common with Omicron, but vaccinated people have protection against severe illness and death. About 78,000 people are hospitalized with Covid-19 nationwide. Early data suggests that Omicron may cause less severe illness than previous variants.
- Case rates continue to soar around many cities, especially in the eastern half of the country. Chicago, Miami, Newark, Memphis, New Orleans, Atlanta and San Juan are all enduring major surges.

In Florida, reports of new cases have increased tenfold over the past two weeks, to more than 30,000 a day. Hospitalizations have also increased, but so far remain well below the levels seen during previous upticks.
Now to the data: On Jan. 4, 2022, 2021 in the U.S. the seven-day daily average number of new cases is 541,613, which is a 14-day increase of 254 percent, with a total of 57,041,530 cases. The seven-day daily average number of new hospitalizations was 105,139; the 14-day change in hospitalization was an increase of 51 percent. On Jan. 4, 2022 in the U.S. the seven-day daily average number of new deaths was 1,323, the 14-day change in new deaths was a decrease of three percent, and the U.S. death total has reached 828,426. Seventy one percent of the U.S. population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated, 84 percent have had one jab, 95 percent of the population who are over 65 have had at least one jab.

This week's issue offers The New York Times summary comparative data from Jan. 5, 2022 for Canada, U.K., France, Italy, Spain, and Germany:
- An average of 44,667 cases per day were reported in Canada in the last week. Cases have increased by 389 percent from the average two weeks ago. Deaths have increased by 103 percent.
- An average of 186,121 cases per day were reported in United Kingdom in the last week. Cases have increased by 114 percent from the average two weeks ago. Deaths have increased by 14 percent.
- An average of 180,568 cases per day were reported in France in the last week. Cases have increased by 233 percent from the average two weeks ago. Deaths have increased by 24 percent.
- An average of 115,791 cases per day were reported in Italy in the last week. Cases have increased by 357 percent from the average two weeks ago. Deaths have increased by 24 percent.
- An average of 112,773 cases per day were reported in Spain in the last week. Cases have increased by 213 percent from the average two weeks ago. Deaths have increased by 59 percent.
- An average of 37,330 cases per day were reported in Germany in the last week. Cases have decreased by 16 percent from the average two weeks ago. Deaths have decreased by 27 percent.
Carla K. Johnson of the Associated Press offers us great reporting in "Covid case counts may be losing importance amid omicron;" a must read. Staying at the AP, Ms Johnson is joined by fellow reporter Lauran Neergard to report the story "How will pandemic end? Omicron clouds forecasts for endgame."

But this fall, Vanity Fair has learned, it dismissed a bold plan to ramp up rapid testing ahead of the holidays.”
