3 Months to MLK Day of Service
Work Together To Help Young People Thrive
|
|
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all, and encouraged all citizens to live up to the purpose and potential of America by applying the principles of nonviolence. MLK Day of Service is a way to honor his life and teachings by engaging in community action that continues to solve social problems.
As you choose how you will participate in this year's MLK Day of Service, plan to work together to help young people thrive by creating a culture of participation. Here are 3 types of suggested MLK Day activities:
Celebrate Young Leaders - Days of service like MLK Day aren’t just times to serve, but also a time to reflect on, demonstrate, recognize, and celebrate the service that’s been done throughout the rest of the year. Recognize youth volunteers & share stories that show the power of youth.
Help Youth Join & Lead - Start the second semester off right and help more young people become members of a youth development organization, enroll in an afterschool program, or join an extracurricular team, club, or group.
Build Capacity for the Future - Even though these participation rates are at or near record-high levels, we’re still leaving 3 of every 4 young people out of actively participating in our democracy. We’re focusing our work on increasing these rates to 50% by America250 on July 4, 2026. Start building capacity in your organization or community to achieve this goal.

Hershey Heartwarming Young Hero: Ethan Hill
|
Growing up in Birmingham, Ethan Hill (11 | Birmingham, Alabama) is very familiar with the issues of hunger and homelessness. On any given night, close to 325 individuals who are homeless can be found on the city’s streets, making beds in doorways, under bridges, and in parks. This number doesn’t include the additional hundreds who reside in area shelters. After meeting and befriending some of his neighbors who were unhoused, Ethan began collecting donations to provide these neighbors with much-needed items. To educate other youth about the challenges facing those experiencing homelessness while giving them an opportunity to support a vulnerable group of community members, Ethan organized the “Homeless Survival Care Packages” project this past spring.
With the support of a Hershey Heartwarming Young Hero grant and with his nonprofit, Ethan’s Heart, serving as a platform, Ethan and a team of mostly elementary-aged volunteers, got to work. Students solicited donations of some of the most often needed items including water bottles, soap and shampoo, tissues, snacks, and face masks. They also created posters to raise awareness about homelessness in Birmingham and to advise those in need about services in the community. By the end of the project, 180 kits were made and distributed.
While students were helping others, they were given the opportunity to discuss homelessness in Birmingham—what their experiences were, what challenges they saw, and how they could work toward short and long-term solutions. They also spoke about the importance of and need for youth service, and how to help others without bias and judgment. Ethan hopes that this packing event will inspire youth to continue to make a difference and he is already heard at work on preparing for his next packing events!

"Light Up The World" - Glee Cast
|
"Lay it all down (All down)
Got somethin' to say
Lay it all down (All down)
Throw your doubt away
Do or die now (Die now)
Step onto the plate
Blow the door wide open like up
Up and away
Let's light up the world tonight
You gotta give up the bark and bite
I know that we got the love alright
Come on and light it up
Light it up tonight!"
Happy Lights On Afterschool!
