On National Walking Day, Walk Through COVID-19
with the HIM Community
Message From CHIA Executive Director/CEO
Sharon Lewis, MBA, RHIA, CHPS, CHPQ, FAHIMA, CAE

This morning an email came across my desk from CHIA member Gloryanne Bryant, RHIA, CDIP, CCS, CCDS, reminding me that today is National Walking Day. For those of you (like me) who may not have been aware of this annual event, I learned that National Walking Day is observed on the first Wednesday in April. It is a day to celebrate the easiest way to be the healthiest version of yourself – take a walk! Abiding by shelter-in-place and social distancing restrictions, early this morning, I walked my dog within the boundaries of my community.

As the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation progresses, the CHIA Board of Directors and CHIA staff continues to reflect upon how to best support the health information management (HIM) community during this uncertain time. In the spirit of “walking” we continue to take one-step-at-a-time and follow the advice and guidelines offered by AHIMA, the California Department of Public Health, the California Society of Association Executives and the CA Governor’s Office. One of our top priorities is to support you in staying connected and providing practical resources. Visit CHIA’s website for COVID-19 resources related to HIM professionals.

CHIA has launched a series of virtual events to connect the HIM community. CHIA invites HIM professionals to a weekly HIM Community Chat to share operational challenges and best practices that are working for you as you walk through navigating new approaches to delivering HIM services during the COVID-19 crises. Also scheduled is a webinar on Coding for COVID-19: Guidelines, New Codes and Resources. Visit the CHIA Events Calendar to register and learn more.
