Haribol Yogis!

I'm just getting back from pilgrimage to India, reflecting on our theme for this month: practices that evoke the heart, or practices that evoke joy & love. This is essentially why I go on pilgrimage with my teacher, Raghunath as much as I can. I go on pilgrimage to be fully immersed in practices that stoke a feeling of love & joy within. These practices are the main practices of Bhakti Yoga, the Yoga of devotion. Every day, we chanted the maha mantra on mala beads, and we engaged in Kirtan in temples, on boats, in rickshaws, basically wherever we could. Every day, we visited holy places and temples. Each day, we heard stories about Sri Chaitanya in Mayapur and Radha Krishna in Vrindavan from our teachers or from people we would meet on our travels. Finally, we had the association of saintly people and special souls who are also on the path of Bhakti, invested in living more devotionally in their lives.

These practices are meant to help focus our minds and hearts on the Divine, instead of focusing on all the other sometimes crazy, random things our minds want to focus on. These practices can give us a glimpse of the spiritual realm in this world. These practices help me cultivate a more personal relationship with God. I am feeling so blessed to be able to journey to India; however, now my task is to continue to stoke this fire of practice even back home, even in the daily grind, so as to not lose the sweetness of pilgrimage.

Today, reflect on the practices that bring you joy, the practices that brighten your heart and really speak to your soul. Maybe it's reading from an inspirational book, hearing stories from a certain teacher, or chanting along with your favorite kirtan! Whatever it is, add it to your daily or weekly routine and see how it effects your mind and heart.
