It is said that we all stood at the foot of Mount Sinai, amidst thunder, lightning, and dense clouds, each and every one of us, receiving the magic of Torah. Join us in a much-of-the-night fest of learning, each choosing our own Torah adventure from a wide variety of sessions taught by our in-house Sha’ar Zahav mavens, plus special guest antiquities expert Lenny Wolfe.

At our first meeting on Sunday, May 2, we’ll join the Center for Common Ground to call voters in states where voter suppression bills have been introduced. This is a great opportunity to learn first hand about the immigrant experience while you provide safety, and turn them on to resources for housing, food, legal and the LGBT community. The late Congressman John Lewis shed his blood crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma to fight for Black voters and the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Today voting rights are under attack again.
Join the National Day of Action May 8! Over a 100 cities will demand the passage of the For the People Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and D.C. Statehood and address one of the greatest obstacles to the passage of civil and voting rights – and one of the last vestiges of slavery – the filibuster!

New or newish to Judaism? Know someone who would like to learn or re-learn the basics of Judaism? This class is a starting point to dive into Jewish learning and/or Jewish practice. Anyone from any background is welcome!
We are hoping to start a group in June, but need at least 5 more participants to complete the cohort. Here are the details: From June 15 – August 24, 2021 on Zoom, from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. The class fee is $149. Partial scholarships available for those who need it.

Weekly Torah Study Group

Study the weekly Torah portion with Rabbi Copeland and lay leaders. For the first half hour, we’ll talk, learn and share thoughts about the portion. In the second half, we will practice our Hebrew reading skills in a compassionate environment! Join for either or both parts of the study.

Adult B’Mitzvah Program
Begins Soon on Zoom
Many of us did not become B’Mitzvah as children and feel like it might be time to make that connection. Our Adult B’mitzvah Program (ABP) is a monthly group educational program, which runs for approximately 8 – 12 months. In the ABP you will learn about the history of the ritual and explore what it means to become an adult B’mitzvah. You will have practical classes in giving a D’var Torah, reading/chanting from the Torah, leading services, and learning the prayer service.
There will also be sessions on the who, what, and why of prayer, different perspectives of G-d, everyday spirituality and much more. The process culminates in either an individual or group B’mitzvah on a Saturday morning at Sha’ar Zahav.

Twenty years after the initial publication of Queer Jews, the Center for LGBTQ and Gender Studies in Religion is hosting a symposium in honor of the role the book played in re-imagining the American and global Jewish worlds, and in memory of David Shneer’s many gifts and contributions to queer Jewish life. David was a longtime friend of many members, and a Sha'ar Zahav educator. Rabbi Mychal Copeland will be facilitating during the symposium as well!
