To the Nourishing Hope Community,
Our city and country are confronting an alarming and defining moment - one that will test our resources and resolve.
With the federal shutdown still in effect (30 days and counting), SNAP benefits will not be replenished on November 1, cutting off a lifeline for every household that depends on it.
In Cook County, 100% of SNAP recipients - nearly 900,000 people - will lose their benefits. Those are our neighbors suddenly at risk of hunger, including children, older adults, and people with disabilities. These are families who work hard every day and still rely on SNAP to help feed the people they love.
SNAP benefits don’t simply feed people, they also fuel our local economies. Every dollar in SNAP benefits spent generates $1.54 in local economic activity. These dollars support grocery stores, corner markets, and small businesses in our neighborhoods. A pause in these benefits would mean millions lost, empty plates, shuttered businesses, and too many Chicago families without food on the table.
We are the ‘City of Big Shoulders’ and in times of crisis we don’t back down, we double down. This is why we are acting now and here's how you can help:
